Wildcats’ Offense Ignites in 11-0 Win Over LMU

Mar 04, 2022 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – K-State set season highs in runs, hits and extra-base hits to go with Blake Adams' quality start in a series-opening 11-0 victory over Loyola Marymount Friday night at Page Stadium.

K-State's offense got three-hit days from Cole Johnson, Dominic Johnson and Dylan Phillips, as each finished with two runs batted in. Phillips' two-run home run sparked a six-run fifth inning, swelling the Wildcats' lead to eight runs.

"Whammer's (Phillips) our guy and when he gets going, usually the rest of our offense follows," said head coach Pete Hughes after the game. "I think we had 10 two-out hits, which is an unbelievable stat. I always tell our guys that good teams have the ability to play with two outs and get those two-out hits. We haven't done that of late, but hopefully it's trending in that direction. Proud of our guys for sticking with it."

The Cats (2-6) finished with 10 two-out hits, going 10-for-18 (.556) with six RBI with two outs. Ten of K-State's first 12 hits came with two gone.

The home run marked the 34th in Phillips' career, as the junior now sits three away from tying K-State's career mark of 37 (Scott Poepard). Phillips also doubled in the game, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

K-State finished the night with seven extra-base hits, five coming with two outs. Orlando Salinas, Jr. and Cole Johnson recorded back-to-back doubles in the second inning, resulting in the game's first run.

K-State got its second straight quality outing from Adams, who turned in six scoreless innings. Adams struck out seven, walked two and scattered five hits in helping the Cats to their first shutout of the year.

"He was just throwing strikes and working fast," Hughes said of Adams' start. "He didn't have his great fastball tonight, but really good pitchers and great competitors can win when you don't have your best stuff. That's what he did tonight, threw a ton of strikes and controlled the tempo of the game from pitch No. 1."

Behind Adams, Nico Rodriguez, Collin Rothermel and Chris Herb each carded a scoreless inning of relief. Rodriguez struck out the side in his inning of work, while Herb and Rothermel each punched out a pair.

The four pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts against three walks. The quartet held Loyola Marymount (1-7-1) hitless with runners in scoring position (0-for-14). LMU hit just .111 with men on base, going 2-for-18 and stranding 13 on base.

Herb, who pitched the ninth and finished the shutout, made his first career appearance as a pitcher. Herb missed all of 2021 with an arm injury after converting from a position player.

"He went from being a positional player, converting to a pitcher and then Tommy John (surgery)," Hughes added. "It's been a long road and no one is in the building, rehabbing and working on their craft more than him. No one invests more time, so it was an easy choice to give him the game ball tonight. That's a heck of a road for that kid to come back and be more than serviceable, but be pretty darn good."

Brady Day recorded his first career RBIs with a two-run, two-out double in the seventh, pushing K-State's run total to double figures. Day, who started his second straight game at third base, was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two walks.

LMU starter Jimmy Galicia was charged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking two. Mason Kokodynski surrendered five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks over 2 1/3 innings.

Lions shortstop Trey Becker recorded his team's only multi-hit effort, ending the night 2-for-4.

K-State hit .538 (7-for-13) with runners in scoring position and .450 (9-for-20) with men on base.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
K-State strung together three consecutive hits with two outs in the second, staking a 2-0 advantage. Salinas started things with a double and scored on Cole Johnson's double before Dominic Johnson's RBI capped the scoring.

Phillips' two-run home run sparked a six-run fifth innings, swelling the Wildcats' lead to eight runs. In the fifth, Cole Johnson and Dominic Johnson added RBI singles, as K-State brought 11 hitters to the plate.
