Track and Field to Compete at Drake Relays, Corky/Crofoot Shootout

Apr 27, 2022 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. -  The Kansas State track and field team will be splitting up the week with groups heading to the Drake Relays on Wednesday-Saturday, April 27-30 in Des Moines, Iowa and to the Corky/Crofoot Shootout on Friday-Saturday, April 29-30 in Lubbock, Texas.

"We have distance and throws going to the Drake Relays," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Drake is historically a great meet for distance relays as well as individual distance events. Temperatures will be mild and there will likely be wet conditions throughout the weekend. We have sprinters and jumpers going to Texas Tech. The conference outdoors will be at Texas Tech this year. Weather will be hot, and Texas Tech has great sprinters and jumpers. I believe we will see some great performances at both meets from our athletes."

The first group will be at the Drake Relays and kick off the weekend on Thursday (April 28) with the women's 800-meter final at 5:00 p.m., CT. The second group will move to Lubbock for the Corky/Crofoot Shootout and begin competition on Friday (April 29) with the men's discus throw at 12:30 p.m., CT.

K-State is coming off a successful weekend at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma, where the Wildcats collected five first-place finishes, including men's triple jump (Devon Richardson), men's 800 meters (Travis Hodge), men's 1,500 meters (Hadley Splechter), women's 5,000 meters (Cailan Steward) and women's 4x400 meter relay team.

K-State has not split up since March 26 when the Wildcats competed at the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational and the ESU Relays.

At the Texas Relays, sophomore Kade McCall set the school record in the hammer throw, placing him 20th currently in the nation, with a mark of 67.56m/221-8. The previous school record was 67.14m/220-3 set by Mitch Dixon at the Texas Invitational in 2018.

Also highlighting the Texas Relays was a first-place finish by junior Kassidy Johnson in the women's 1,500-meter section A. Johnson clocked in at 4:20.29, just .01 seconds off her personal best.

The distance medley relay squad came in first place on the second day of the Texas Relays. The team, comprised of fifth year senior Noah Stevenson, sophomore Kyle Gale, fifth-year senior Travis Hodge and junior Kyle Johnston, finished with a time of 9:42.04, .4 seconds faster than Princeton in second place. Also in the event were Big 12 foes Texas Tech, Texas, TCU and Kansas.

K-State will return to the R.V. Christian Track on May 6-7 for the Ward Haylett Invitational to finish off the season before heading back to Lubbock, Texas for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships on May 13-15.
