High Jump Highlights Third Day of NCAA West Preliminary

May 27, 2022 | Track & Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kansas State track and field continued the momentum at the NCAA West Preliminary on Friday (May 27) at John McDonnell Field and will take their spot at nationals in Eugene, Oregon.

Fifth year seniors Tejaswin Shankar and Kyle Alcine finished in the top 12 of the high jump to qualify for NCAA's.

Shankar tied for first place in the men's high jump with Oklahoma's Vernon Turner with a height of 2.18m/7-1.75. Finding a spot in the top 12 was Alcine with a mark of 2.15m/7-0.50. Freshman Kamyren Garrett tied with four other competitors at the 2.15m/7-0.50 mark, but were just shy of advancing to nationals. Closing out for the Wildcats was junior Devon Richardson tied for 43rd, reaching a height of 2.00m/6-6.75.

"Kyle jumped better," stated Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "He performed at as good as a level as he has during the outdoor season. Honestly, I thought Kamyren probably had some of the best jumps he has had, technically. Tejaswin showed that physically he is at a high level. It is hard to make it to nationals any time. There were some good guys today that had been to the national meet and scored and didn't make it, so it is not easy. For Kyle and Tejaswin to get it done on their last chance, it's great for them to go out on a good note."

"Going into this meet, it is all about getting the job done," said Shankar. "That is what we did, and it is good to go to nationals one more time and go represent K-State and see what we can do there. It was really special to have my mom in the crowd and just for her to be here watching me is exciting. I think she had a lot of fun. The most important take away from this meet is to just see that the baton is being passed to people coming in and keeping the High Jump U title. The future is in the right hands."

The 4x400-meter relay squad, comprised of junior Sean Wilson, freshman Antonio Hanson, junior Tim Lambert Jr. and sophomore Kyle Gale ran a school record time of 3:03.97 and finished the event in eighth, putting them on the start list for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The team previously set the school record time of 3:04.27 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Lubbock, Texas.

"The 4x400-meter squad did a really good job," stated Rovelto. "They ran well. They competed in a heat that was pretty hot. I thought, for sure, that it was going to be four out of that heat to make it to nationals, turned out to be five. They finally got the school record."

Junior Hadley Splechter competed in the men's 1,500-meter quarterfinals and recorded a time of 3:43.54. Overall, Splechter came in 15th.

In the men's 400-meter quarterfinals, Gale finished with a time of 46.01, .55 seconds faster than his time in the first round. Gale ended the event in 18th overall.

Richardson made an appearance in the triple jump where he placed 29th with a leap of 15.26m/50-0.75.

The fourth and final day of competition will kick off for K-State at 6:35 p.m. with the women's 100-meter quarterfinals at the John McDonnell Field on Saturday (May 28).
