Bacianskaite Finishes as Heptathlon Runner-Up at Big 12 Championships

NORMAN, Okla. – Junior Urte Bacianskaite finished as the runner-up in the heptathlon to lead the K-State men's and women's track and field teams on Saturday (May 13) during the second day of the Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla., at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex.
Host Oklahoma leads both the men's and women's standings after eight scored events with 55 and 75 points, respectively. The K-State women sit in fourth place with 38 points, while the men are seventh with 27 points.
Bacianskaite finished second in the heptathlon with 5,541 points, highlighted by her shot put win on Friday (May 12). It was the highest finish by a Wildcat in the heptathlon since Ryann Krais won the event in 2012.
Three other Wildcats finished in the top-15 of the heptathlon, including junior Maddie Righter (11th/5,020 points), sophomore Madelyn McCabe (12th/4,992 points) and freshman Delaney Wright (15th/4,574 points).
Eight more Wildcats landed on the podium highlighted by a third-place finish by junior Shalom Olotu in the women's long jump and fifth-place finishes by sophomore Emil Uhlin in the decathlon, freshman Aaron Antoine in the men's high jump and sophomore Grace Thompson in the women's shot put. Other podium finishers included freshman Jhavor Bennett in the men's long jump and distance runners junior Hannah Stewart, freshman Cecilia Fisher and sophomore Tommy Hazen in the women's and men's steeplechase.
All three jumpers recorded new personal bests, as Antoine cleared a height of 2.11m/6-11 in high jump, along with Olotu leaping 6.41m/21-0.50 and Bennett recording a mark of 7.57m/24-10 in the women's and men's long jump.
Thompson finished fifth in the shot put with a new personal best throw of 16.21m/53-2.25, two feet further than her previous best from the Bobcat Invitational (March 31-April 1).
Uhlin finished fifth in the decathlon with 7,539 points, which was 99 points better than his first decathlon at the Jim Click Combined Events (April 6-7). He won the 1,500 meters, tying his personal-best time of 4:23.85, and finished third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.76m/15-7.25. He nearly equaled his 2022 performance in the decathlon at the Big 12 Championships, in which, he placed fourth with 7,587 points.
Stewart and Fisher finished seventh and eighth in the women's steeplechase, with a time of 10:47.75 and 10:50.09, respectively. Hazen also finished seventh in the men's steeplechase in a time of 9:09.00.
During the preliminary races, K-State had five athletes qualify for the final races on Sunday afternoon. Senior Stephen Kielhofner and junior Hadley Splechter advanced in the men's 1,500 meters, along with senior Shalysa Wray and junior O'Shalia Johnson in the women's 400 meter dash and Nico Moulin in the 400 meter hurdles.
Kielhofner and Splechter finished in the top-10 in the preliminary 1,500 meters with Kielhofner placing second with a new personal-best time of 3:43.27 and Splechter placing ninth in 3:43.49. Wray and Johnson finished sixth and ninth in times of 53.10 seconds and 53.69 seconds, respectively. Moulin also placed ninth in the hurdles in 53.35 seconds.
In the heptathlon, Righter had a top-three finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 40.08m/131-6. McCabe's performance was highlighted by a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.64m/18-6. Wright ended the day with four personal bests, including leading all Wildcats in the long jump with a fifth-place finish with a leap of 5.68m/18-7.75. She claimed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.34.
The third and final day of the Big 12 Championships begins Sunday (May 14) at 12 p.m., CT, with the women's high jump, discus and triple jump, also on the track with the women's 4x100 relay.
