KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 8 Tennessee plated 13 runs over the first four innings in Tuesday's nightcap, as the Vols ran away with a 15-5 win over K-State at Robert M. Lindsay Field inside Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

In the first meeting between the two programs, K-State (7-4) carried a two-run lead into the second, until Tennessee (12-1) built a 9-2 lead behind a six-run third inning to extend its win streak out to 11. The Vols' launched six home runs on the day led by freshman shortstop David Curley, who nearly hit for the home run cycle (3).

"We ran into a red-hot offense, credit to Tennessee," head coach Pete Hughes said. "They played from behind early and took back the momentum, and consistently extended their lead. They played great."

"I'm proud of our effort. We never quit and we kept fighting. It was a good character builder that will be invaluable to our program this season," said Hughes.

The Vols tagged starter Owen Boerema (1-1) for nine runs, all earned, in his three innings. Boerema faced 20 batters, surrendering nine hits to go with four strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Mason Buss tossed a perfect 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, without allowing a hit or walk and retiring all seven batters he faced.

Chuck Ingram went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Cayden Phillips launched a two-out, solo home run to tally the Cats 21st of the season and 20th in the last nine games.

THE RUNDOWN
K-State opened scoring in the first inning as Brendan Jones, who was the second batter of the Cats lineup, singled up the middle before moving into scoring position with a walk by Kaelen Culpepper. The duo advanced to second and third after a throwing error by the catcher before scoring on a liner into center from the Big 12 Player of the Week, Brady Day.

The Cats' lead carried into the second inning until a two-run home run and RBI double handed Tennessee the one-run lead.

SEC Player of the Week Billy Amick led off the third with a solo homer down the left field line to start off the Vols six-run inning.

The Wildcats rallied with a pair of RBIs by ground out from David Bishop and double to left from Ingram to bring the game with five, 9-4.

The Vols took back momentum, scoring six runs between the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win.
