#10 Clemson Slows Down K-State Wednesday Night, 8-3
Mar 06, 2024 | Baseball
CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson, the 10th-ranked team in the nation by D1Baseball, claimed an 8-3 decision over K-State at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Wednesday night.
The Tigers (10-1) capitalized on a three-run homer in the second to back right-hander Billow Barlow's five inning start. The sophomore surrendered just one earned run in his second start of the season, allowing six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
K-State (7-5) outhit Clemson 10-8, but was held to just three runs with RBIs coming from Brady Day, Kaelen Culpepper, and Raphael Pelletier for its offensive production.
"Tonight we made just enough mistakes on the mound and in the field to lose the game," said head coach Pete Hughes. "I thought we had plenty of opportunities to score more than three runs.
Sophomore Andrew Evans (1-1) suffered the loss in his first start of the season, scattering four hits for five earned runs across his three innings of work. Reliver's Preston Martinez and Jackson Wentworth combined for seven strikeouts, limiting the Tigers to two hits through four scoreless innings.
K-State had two-hit nights from Day, Jayden Lobliner and David Bishop.
"Twelve runners left on base is a pretty good indicator that these were opportunities lost offensively. It makes it difficult to win. Even more so on the road," Hughes said.
"We need to digest the last couple of days quickly and learn from them before this weekend's Big 12 opener."
THE RUNDOWN
After a scoreless first inning, Clemson plated five runs over the next two frames led by a three-run homer by third baseman Nolan Nawrocki.
Martinez relieved Evans in the fourth, scattering just two hits in his 1 1/3 innings.
The Wildcats tabbed their first run to the board in the fifth with grounder to short by Culpepper to score Chuck Ingram from third, who reached base with a lead-off single and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher.
Back-to-back singles by Lobliner and Daniel River led off the next inning and moved runners to first and third, leading to Pelletier's sacrifice fly and brought the score within three.
Leading 5-2 into the eighth, Clemson took advantage of a K-State error and a wild pitch to expand their lead.
Bishop singled through the right side to start the final frame until two consecutive walks loaded the bases. With one out, Day lined a 0-1 pitch into right field to nail the final run to the board.
