K-State Falls at Coastal Carolina Saturday
Feb 15, 2025 | Baseball
CONWAY, S.C. – Four K-State errors and eight batters hit by a pitch helped Coastal Carolina to an 8-3 defeat of the Wildcats Saturday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.
"It's quite obvious we are playing bad baseball," head coach Pete Hughes commented. "We're giving away runs and failing to hit with men on base. You're just not going to beat good teams when you give them extra outs and extra opportunities.
"The other thing that is just as obvious is both our players and coaches are talented enough to make the adjustments that need to be made," Hughes said.
K-State's (0-2) Seth Dardar and AJ Evasco each produced multi-hit games, both going 2-for-2 at the plate. Dardar, who reached base in all four at bats, launched the Cats' first homer of the season with a solo shot in the ninth. Keegan O'Connor led the Cats with two RBI, finishing the day 1-for-4.
Left-hander JJ Slack (0-1) was credited the loss in his first start in a Wildcat uniform. The graduate student surrendered four runs (three earned) on three hits in his 1 1/3 innings of work. Five pitchers made an appearance in relief for K-State, combining for four runs (three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.
The Chants' (2-0) Dominick Carbone (1-0) picked up the win in relief, striking out each of the three batters he faced. Centerfielder Dean Mihos lead both squads with a three-hit performance (3-for-3), while designated hitter Dom Tozzi drove in three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats led off scoring in the opening frame as Dee Kennedy reached on an error and advanced to third on a shot to right by Nick English. O'Connor delivered a two-out, two-run single into left to drive in the duo and hand the Cats' their first lead of the season.
CCU immediately responded with three runs, led by a two-RBI double into deep center by Tozzi. The Chants added four runs to the board, spanning over three innings, highlighted by a two-out, two-run homer by Sebastian Alexander.
Down 7-2 in the fifth, K-State challenged the Chants' defense with back-to-back singles by Seth Dardar and David Bishop followed by a walk to load the bases leading CCU to make its first call to the bullpen. Left-hander Dominick Carbone ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

K-State will face Saint Joseph's (1-1) in Cats' third game at Baseball at the Beach Sunday, slated for a 10 a.m. CT first pitch. Fans can follow the action via live stats online or check for game updates on social media (@KStateBSB).
