Cats Hold Off Hawks’ Rally to Snag First Win
Feb 17, 2025 | Baseball
K-State (1-2) sent eight players to the plate in the Cats' four-run second, which was highlighted by a two-run homer from David Bishop before the Cats expanded their lead to eight, 9-1. St. Joseph's (1-2) battled with four runs in the sixth before closing the gap to three, but the Cats managed to post a pair of insurance runs in the final frame to secure the first victory of the season.
"It was a good team win tonight," said head coach Pete Hughes. "It begins with a great start, and we had that with Michael Quevedo tonight. He put us in a spot to help us build a lead along with big hits from David Bishop, Nick English, and Seth Dardar. We had a lot of people contribute to tonight's win, which speaks to the depth of our program and our bench."
Quevedo, who carried a one-hit bid into the fourth inning, picked up the win in his K-State debut, as the left-handed starter surrendered one run in his 4 1/3 innings of work. Quevedo allowed three hits and struck out four on the night with three walks.
Sophomore James Guyette showcased a dominant relief outing and was awarded the save, striking out four of the six batters he faced.
Dardar led both squads with a four-hit performance, finishing the night 4-for-6 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. English and Bishop each belted a two-run homer in the night cap, with English driving in a game-high three RBI.
St. Joseph's Justin Sweeney was credited with the loss, after allowing five runs (five earned) on four hits to move to 0-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After holding St. Joseph's scoreless in the first, K-State broke through in the second with the help of a two-run homer by Bishop. Shintaro Inoue drove in a run with a grounder to first before a wild pitch handed the Cats a 2-0 lead.
With two outs and runner on third, Bishop turned on the second pitch from Sweeney and belted his first homer of the season into left field to double the Cats' lead.
Quevedo utilized nine pitches to retire the Hawks in order in the bottom of the inning, marked by a three-pitch strikeout.
K-State added a run to the board, as Dardar lasered a double into center and avoided the diving efforts of the Hawks' centerfielder before the second baseman scored on a single from English.
In the bottom of the third, Dee Kennedy threw across the diamond for the double play to keep the Hawks' scoreless.
K-State stretched its lead to 7-0 with doubles by Kyan Lodice and Dardar before the Hawks ended the drought in the fourth with an RBI double by Michael Pierson.
A two-run blast by Nick English in the sixth extended the Cats lead to seven, 9-1, until the Hawks answered with a four-run sixth.
St. Joseph's scored six over a three-inning span to bring the game with three but was held off as Guyette retired the Hawks in order in the final frame to secure the win.
