K-State Ready for Weekend at SIRA Championship Regatta

Apr 17, 2025 | Rowing

Friday racing begins with timed trials ahead of semifinals

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's rowing team will race in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Melton Hill Lake competing in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship on Friday-Saturday (April 18-19).

"Last weekend, we had multiple strong performances, and we want to keep building on what we have done well throughout the season," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "This regatta is set on a good course, and we get a lot of water time prior to competing. We know that we are fit and strong, so getting that water time is what we need most right now."

Racing on Friday will include each boat competing in a morning time trial and semifinals in the afternoon. Results from Friday will determine race times in Saturday's finals. Live results and more information can be accessed through the SIRA website.

"There will be good competition across all boats," Sweeney said. "We're excited to have another opportunity to focus on the basics of good, clean rowing, while also seeing how fast we can be."

Last season at this regatta, the Wildcats had three boats medal, including a gold medal for the 1v4+ and silver medals for the 1v8+ and 3v8+.

Coming off of the Creighton Duel, where the Cats recorded four wins, the 3v8+ was also named Big 12 Boat of the Week on April 16.

Prior to Creighton, the Wildcats raced in the Sarasota 2k on March 28-29 with the 1v4+ earning a bronze medal in the Grand 'A' final against all Big 12 competitors and multiple out of conference ranked opponents.

The team also raced in the Hornet Invitational on March 14-15, winning six races throughout the weekend. Following competition in California, the 1v4+ was named the first Big 12 Boat of the Week for the 2025 season.

K-State opened the season March 8 competing in Oklahoma City against Central Oklahoma and Tulsa, winning five races across two sessions.
