CAREER: A graduate transfer running back who came to K-State as a career 2,000-yard rusher and went over the 3,000-yard mark while playing for the Wildcats... Finished career ranked 10th nationally among active players in career rushing yards and 11th in career rushing touchdowns... A three-year member of the Maxwell Award watch list.

2019: Played in 11 games with nine starts, leading the Wildcats with 737 yards and finishing second on the team with six rushing touchdowns... Also caught six passes out of the backfield for 49 yards... Ranked seventh in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game (67.0)... Rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown in his first game at K-State, the second most rushing yards by a Wildcat in their debut (166 yards by Cornelius Davis vs. Army, 1966)... Backed that up with 103 yards against Bowling Green, the first Wildcat with two-straight games of 100 yards rushing to open a season since John Hubert in 2012... Set a new career high in receiving yards against West Virginia, a game in which he tied his career best in catches... Missed the Kansas and Texas games due to injury.

2018 (at Ball State): Played in 11 games with 10 starts, leading the team with 659 rushing yards and seven touchdowns... Opened the season with a 100-yard effort against Central Connecticut, while he had two-touchdown games against Kent State and Western Michigan... Set a career high with four catches for 26 yards against Northern Illinois... A member of the Maxwell Award watch list.

2017 (at Ball State): Saw action in the first three games with two starts before suffering a season-ending injury... Rushed 48 times for 207 yards with three touchdowns, including two against UAB... Notched his first-career receiving score against Tennessee Tech, a game in which he carded a season-best 92 rushing yards... A member of the Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award watch lists.

2016 (at Ball State): Played in all 12 games with nine starts at running back, en route to First Team All-MAC honors... Led the conference and tied for sixth in Ball State history with 12 rushing touchdowns, while he piled up 1,332 rushing yards to rank fourth in school history... Tallied seven 100-yard rushing games, a mark that is tied for third in school history... Rushed for 264 yards against Buffalo, a career high and the second most in school history... Set a career high with three touchdowns against Northern Illinois to tie for third in school history... Rushed 251 times on the year, ranking eighth in Ball State history... Also caught one pass for 18 yards at Central Michigan.

2015 (at Ball State): Graduated high school early to join the Cardinals and ended up playing in all 12 games as a true freshman... Totaled 608 yards and eight touchdowns on 152 carries, the latter two leading the team... Had a season high 73 yards and a touchdown against UMass, a game in which he had two catches for 16 yards... Scored a pair of touchdowns in his first-career game against VMI and two more at Eastern Michigan, the final one proving to be the game-winning touchdown... Caught a 19-yard pass against Toledo.

HIGH SCHOOL: Played at Arsenal Tech under coach Anthony Henderson... Rated the 119th-best running back in the Class of 2015 by 247Sports and the 20th-best player in Indiana by Rivals... Set the school’s career rushing record with 4,817 yards... Named the 2014 Indianapolis Public Schools Player of the Year... Earned all-state honors as a senior, while he was a three-time all-city pick... Voted Arsenal Tech’s Most Valuable Player as a sophomore and junior.

PERSONAL: James Derrick Gilbert was born November 10, 1995, in Indianapolis, Indiana... Son of Takeisha Brandon... Has two sisters... Earned his bachelor’s degree from Ball State in December 2018 and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in academic advising.
