MANHATTAN, Kan. - In front of the largest home crowd in four seasons, the Kansas State women's basketball team opened up Big 12 Conference play Sunday with an impressive 63-45 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in Bramlage Coliseum to remain a perfect 8-0 at home this season. The Wildcats used stifling defense and a red-hot shooting performance to improve their record to 11-3.
It did not take long for K-State to get on the board, as sophomore guard Brittany Chambers knocked down a 3-pointer just 21 seconds into the contest. From there, the shots continued to rain down for the Wildcats.
Kansas State went on to drain a season-high 12 3-pointers, all while shooting a blistering 50 percent from downtown for the game. The last time the Wildcats connected on 12 3-pointers was on January 2 of last year against the Yale Bulldogs.
K-State received a big boost off the bench from junior Alina Voronenko, who tallied a career-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Kansas State's bench outscored Oklahoma State's bench 33-17 to keep the Cowgirls at bay.
Chambers kept her hot-hand by knocking down four shots from beyond the arc to go along with nine rebounds. The Jordan, Minn., native finished with 16 points marking the eighth time this season she has led the team in scoring. The tandem of Chambers and Voronenko went a combined 8-for-14 from beyond the arc.
Not to be outdone by her backcourt teammates, foward Jalana Childs notched her first double-double of the season by scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. It also marked the second double-double of her career with both coming against Oklahoma State.
Guard Taelor Karr scored in double-figures for the eighth time this season, finishing with 10 points.
K-State's defense forced the Cowgirls into two four-minute scoring droughts, while holding OSU to just 27 percent from the field in the opening stanza. Though holding a 12-point lead at the half, the Wildcat defense did not letup, as the `Cats held Oklahoma State to just 22 second-half points.
The Wildcats will hit the road Wednesday as they head to Norman, Okla., to take on conference foe Oklahoma at 7p.m., at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners are ranked No. 17 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and are No. 19 in the Associated Press Poll.
