Kansas State Defeated at Fourth Ranked Baylor

WACO, Texas – Kansas State looked to surprise fourth-ranked Baylor with an upset on Saturday night at the Ferrell Center, but the Lady Bears tossed aside a sluggish first quarter to down the Wildcats, 75-50.

Kansas State (11-8, 3-5 Big 12) was led by junior guard Kayla Goth with 22 points with five assists, three rebounds and three steals. The product of DeForest, Wisconsin, has tallied 20 or more points in four games this season.

Baylor (17-1, 7-0) was led by its post duo of Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox. The pair combined for 49 points and 38 rebounds, as Brown tallied 33 points and 19 points, while Cox added 16 points, 19 rebounds and five assists.

K-State's defense was stout to begin Saturday's game, as the Wildcats held Baylor to 20 percent shooting and six turnovers in the first six and a half minutes of the game. During the stretch K-State held a 9-6 lead, as four different Wildcats registered a field goal.

Baylor ended the final three and a half minutes on a 10-0 run, as Brown scored six of the 10 points to put the Lady Bears in front after the first quarter, 14-9.

After the Lady Bears took a 24-13 lead with 5:05 remaining in the second quarter, K-State rallied with five straight points to pull within six, 24-18, with 3:36 left in the second stanza. Cymone Goodrich buried a corner 3-pointer, while Peyton Williams added a jumper to narrow the margin.

Baylor would proceed to close the half on a 10-0 run to hold a 34-18 lead at the break. The Lady Bears shot just 44.1 percent (15-of-34) from the field, while K-State tallied a 27.6 percent effort (8-of-29). Baylor dominated the glass in the first half, 32-10, including 14 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Bears opened the second half with a 7-3 run to build a 41-21 lead with 7:38 to play in the third quarter. Brown notched five of the seven points during the run.

After a Kali Jones rebound and putback and Goodrich's second 3-pointer of the night, Kansas State closed the gap to 16, 45-29, with 4:30 to play in the third quarter. Baylor would end the quarter on a 13-7 run to build a 58-36 lead.

A 10-0 burst over a two-minute stretch in the fourth quarter brought K-State to within 19, 65-46, with 6:00 remaining in the game. A Williams jumper started the rally, while Goth buried her third 3-pointer of the night. Kaylee Page followed with a three-pointer and Jones finished the run with a layup.

Baylor would close out the game on a 10-4 run to close out the home win.

K-State finished the night shooting 31.3 percent (20-of-64) from the floor, while Baylor shot 41.9 percent (31-of-74). The Lady Bears registered a 69-24 advantage on the boards.

Kansas State will play its final home game in the month of January, as the Wildcats host TCU on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on COX Channel Kansas and K-StateHD.TV. The game will also be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free on kstatesports.com.
