K-State Falls on Senior Night in Four Sets

Nov 17, 2018 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State opened Senior Night with a win in the first set and contributions by a majority of its senior class, but it struggled to find consistency in the following sets as it lost 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-15) to Texas Tech on Saturday in Ahearn Field House.

Coming off a comeback road win earlier in the week, the Wildcats (14-12, 4-11 Big 12) tried to rally in the second and third sets despite early deficits, but the attempts fell short due in part to a Texas Tech (17-11, 6-8 Big 12) defense that held K-State to a .142 hitting percentage in the match.

"We've been talking a lot about finding some level of consistency, from match to match and from person to person and from system to system," said K-State head coach Suzie Fritz. "It felt like we would make one really good play and one really bad play… There's not one specific thing. It's just the ability to be good over time and connect points."

The loss was K-State's first to Texas Tech in Manhattan since 2004 and second straight loss on Senior Night in Ahearn Field House.

"They've earned more than that," said Fritz about the class of six seniors. "I would have liked to play them all, that would have been ideal. I would have liked them, more importantly, to go out on a win in Ahearn. We all wanted that for them."

Redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne led K-State with 11 kills on 30 swings (three errors) while also notching 13 digs for her second career double-double. Senior Kylee Zumach and sophomore Peyton Williams each had eight kills. Williams was clean on her 16 attacks, hitting a match-best .500.

Defensively, K-State had nine blocks, led by four from Williams. Freshman Gloria Mutiri, junior Elle Sandbothe and Zumach each had three block assists. Seniors Reilly Killeen (11) and Devan Fairfield (10) each had double-digit digs.

Defense was crucial to K-State's opening set victory as it used three blocks to limit the Red Raiders to a .216 hitting percentage. Leading for much of the early part of the set, K-State fought off Texas Tech's comeback attempt midway through it. A Texas Tech block evened it at 18-18 but kills by Heyne and Sandbothe reestablished the K-State lead at 20-18. Texas Tech went on to close it to 22-21 but kills from Zumach and Williams clinched the set.

Despite trailing by as much as seven points at 20-13 in the second, K-State crept back by scoring nine of the next 11 points to tie it at 22-all. Williams used one of her two kills in the set to spark the rally, and three straight Texas Tech errors made it 20-17 before the Red Raiders called a timeout. The halt in momentum worked for Texas Tech as K-State's service error out of the break made it 21-17, but aces from Zsofia Gyimes and Mutiri fueled the set-tying effort. However, another Texas Tech timeout stopped K-State's rally once again as the Red Raiders used a pair of kills by Chandler Atwood and an attack error by K-State to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third, K-State trailed late once again, this time at 21-15, but another comeback attempt by the Wildcats forced the set into extra points. Texas Tech errors, two on attack and another on a serve, helped make it 22-19 before Zumach threaded one of her two kills in the set to force Texas Tech into a timeout at 22-20. With the score at 23-21 Texas Tech, K-State rattled off three straight points, including the last on a kill by Williams, to give it set point, 24-23. However, a kill by Brooke Kanas tied it back up before a serve by Kylie Rittimann graced the top of the net to fall in for an ace and put Texas Tech on the brink of winning the set. An attack error by Mutiri eventually sealed the set for the Red Raiders at 26-24.

In the fourth, K-State struggled to connect offensively as it hit -.065 with only six kills. The Wildcats had eight attack errors in the final set, including three on Texas Tech blocks. The closest K-State could get to cutting Texas Tech's advantage was two points at 13-11 before the Red Raiders pulled away with the help of its 13 kills on the offensive side and 17 digs defensively.

For the match, Texas Tech had 59 kills and 71 digs. K-State had 40 and 56.

The Wildcats will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday, November 21 at TCU. The match in Fort Worth is set for a 1 p.m. first serve.
