No. 15 TCU Steals Series Opener From K-State, 4-2
Mar 24, 2018 | Baseball
FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU first baseman Luken Baker hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the 15th-ranked Horned Frogs to a 4-2 victory in the series opener Friday at Lupton Stadium.
K-State (12-10, 0-1 Big 12) clung to a 2-1 lead after seven innings, thanks to a quality effort from starter Kasey Ford. Baker's home run off reliever Jared Marolf was part of a three-run eighth inning for TCU (12-7, 1-0 Big 12).
Ford, a sophomore righty, allowed just one earned run and scattered six hits in his seven innings of work, striking out six in a no decision. It was Ford's fourth quality outing in six Friday night starts this season.
Marolf came in to start the eighth inning for K-State and hit the first batter he faced, Zach Humphreys, before serving up Baker's fifth home run of the season. After issuing a walk, the sophomore righty-hander's day was done, as he took the loss after not recording an out.
The Horned Frogs added an unearned run courtesy of a Wildcat error later in the inning for a three-run eighth inning.
A pair of TCU relievers, Augie Mihlbauer and Durbin Feltman, combined to shut down the Wildcat offense over the game's final 3 1/3 innings. The duo did not allow a hit and struck out seven of 11 batters they faced.
Mihlbauer was credited for his first win of the season while Feltman collected his third save of the year and 29th of his career.
Frogs starter Jared Janczak gave up two earned runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings and ended the night with six strikeouts.
K-State center fielder Drew Mount recorded a team-high three hits, going 3-for-5. First baseman Trent McMaster had a 2-for-4 day with a double.
TCU took a 1-0 lead in the second on Connor Shepherd's two-out solo home run, his first of the season.
K-State took a one-run lead in the top of the fourth when TK McWhertor laced a one-out double that scored Hanz Harker, who led off the inning with a walk. A batter later, Brett Owen brought home Rainer Ausmus on an RBI groundout that gave the Cats their first lead.
The game remained scoreless until the home half of the eighth innings.
K-State had runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings and finished the game 1-for-13 (.077) with runners in scoring position.
McMaster and Ausmus led off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles and were standing on second and third with one out. Mihlbauer lifted Janczak with two outs in the inning and struck out Cameron Thompson to end the Cats' threat.
K-State hitters combined to strike out 13 times while walking four times.
Sophomore Will Brennan, hitting in the three-spot for the first time, went 0-for-4 and snapped his career-long on-base streak at 44 games.
Tyler Eckberg finished the game for the Wildcats, allowing one hit and no runs in an inning of relief.
