‘Cats Travel to Lawrence for Jayhawk Classic Starting Friday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Securing another triangular victory last weekend, the Kansas State track and field teams will look to maintain their momentum down the road in Lawrence, Kansas, with the Jayhawk Classic starting Friday, January 22 through Saturday, January 23 inside Anschultz Pavilion.
Friday's meet schedule starts at 10 a.m., CT, and then Saturday's slate of events will begin at 11 a.m., CT.
This is the first time since the 2018-19 campaign the Wildcats will compete in Lawrence, Kansas during the indoor season. For the second consecutive weekend, K-State will face off with its in-state rivals, as Kansas and Wichita State will fill up the lineup cards for the two-day meet.
"We have quite a few throwers and distance runners competing this week," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "There will also be some combined eventers and a few sprinters. As with our meets we have hosted this far, it appears this meet will be limited in numbers. We look at every opportunity to compete as valuable. Under the circumstances, training has gone well, and we are progressing in preparations for the upcoming meets which will be a step up in competition."

Shankar Earns High Point Award to Lead K-State to Triangular Win
It was another stellar day for senior Tejaswin Shankar at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular, as the New Delhi, India, native competed in five events for K-State and collected 25 points, which helped the Wildcats score another victory in the triangular showdown. The All-American grabbed the "High Point Scorer" award amongst his peers, while recording three first-place finishes in the jump events and registering personal bests in the triple jump (15.73m/51-7.25) and the shot put (12.17m/39-11.25) competitions. With his performance in the sand, Shankar now leads the Big 12 in the triple jump and the high jump (2.24m/7-4.25), which he earned back at the K-State Winter Invitational on December 5, 2020.
NCAA Leaderboard
Through four meets in 2020-21, K-State has recorded numerous individual outings that have ranked inside the top 15 for the NCAA this season. Those who have earned spots next to the nation's best includes freshman Kyle Gale (No. 4, 400 Meters), senior Tejaswin Shankar (No. 1 High Jump; No. 4, Triple Jump), junior Anigbata Grace Chinonyelum (No. 3, Triple Jump), junior Chantoba Bright (No. 6, Triple Jump), senior Colin Echols (No. 9, Weight Throw) and juniors Vitoria Alves (No. 4, 60m Hurdles) and Kassidy Johnson (No. 14, 800 Meters).
USTFCCCA Top-10 Marks of the Week (Jan. 12-18)
The 'Cats keep landing in the USTFCCCA Top-10 Marks of the Week, and now a few others have made an impact around the country since last Saturday. Three Wildcats earned their first spots on the list for the season, while two others maintained their dominance in their respective events. Junior Vitoria Alves posted another strong performance in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.27 seconds, which was good for the fifth-best mark of the week amongst her NCAA competitors. Senior Tejaswin Shankar followed suit with top-five outings in the high jump and the triple jump at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular, as the All-American recorded a leap of 15.73m/51-7.25 in the triple jump and a mark of 2.15m/7-0.50 in the high jump event. The newcomers to the coveted list for 2020-21 season features sophomore Maddie Righter's outing in the high jump (No. 7, High Jump), while junior Alex Ferguson (No. 2, 1:22.21) and sophomore Tim Lambert Jr., (No. 7, 1:13.75) both notched top-10 marks in the 600-yard race.
Gale Does It Again
It is becoming a common theme every week for Kyle Gale to break meet records inside Ahearn Field House, and he pulled off the same feat once again last Saturday, as the freshman broke loose around Ward Haylett Track in 47.42 seconds to secure the 400-meter victory. His time broke former Wildcat Tyrone Watkins' mark of 47.88 in the event. This is Gale's third time in as many events he has secured a meet record at a home competition, with the other two coming back at the K-State Winter Invitational (Dec. 5) and the Wildcat Invitational (Jan. 9).
Climbing Up the Record Books
Last week's triangular victory featured a bevy of individual outings that dabbled with K-State history. Four athletes broke the mold and entered the top-10 in school history during the indoor season in their respective events, which included Gale's 400-meter performance (No. 4, 47.42), sophomore Shalysa Wray in the 60 meters (No. 7, 7.51), Shankar's mark in the triple jump (No. 5, 15.73m/51-7.25) and freshman Rhianna Phipps' leap in the long jump (No. 10, 6.09m/19-11.75).
