K-State Concludes Jayhawk Classic in Convincing Fashion
Jan 23, 2021 | Track & Field
LAWRENCE, Kansas – The Kansas State track and field teams finished up the Jayhawk Classic inside Anschultz Pavilion on Saturday (January 23) afternoon with solid performances throughout the day, which included victories from sophomore Devon Richardson and junior Kassidy Johnson in their respective events.
"We had a number of folks who ran off events for them today," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "They ran shorter than their primary events and there were some good efforts."
Taking the reins for K-State in the high jump, Richardson recorded a personal best 2.10m, which boosted him to first place amongst the packed lineup of Kansas and Wichita State opponents. The Lee's Summit, Missouri, product achieved his winning mark in the fifth segment of the event, where he overcame a failed first attempt.
"I came into the meet with the intention of getting a good mark," said Richardson. "I haven't been feeling like my old self, and my performance in the triple jump last week was a big confidence booster. I have been doing a lot of overthinking and I realized that I was only making it harder for me to accomplish my goals. During the competition, I hit a few bars and I just told myself to relax and to just have fun. That made it easier for me to put the pieces together to have a good day."
"My goal today was to get a good, speed workout in and see what I could do while I was at it," said Johnson. "Speed is not my strong suit, so I was in the back from the start. I just tried to hold on to the pack as much as I could and not allow the gap to get too big. Around the last 100 meters, the gap really started to close, so I just tried to use my endurance strength and give it everything I had to the finish."
That momentum from the women's race carried over into the men's 600-yards event, where K-State's Gabriel Louw sped towards a second-place outing with a pace of 1:16.47. Sophomore teammate Tim Lambert exploded out of the gates in the 200-meter race, which placed him second overall with a sprint of 22.09 seconds, a new personal best.
In the women's long jump, Righter once again found herself in the top three of the leaderboard, as she recorded a leap of 5.71m, good for second place.
It was a busy day for freshman Regan Dineen at the Jayhawk Classic, as the Algonquin, Illinois, native posted personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (9.56) and the long jump (5.37m).
Junior Taylor Latimer unleashed a shot put of 14.93m in the latter part of Saturday's schedule, as she brought home another silver-medal performance for K-State.
The men's shot put featured a top-five outing from freshman James Higgs, who launched a personal best 14.27m in the ring to place fifth overall.
K-State pushed through in the 800-meter races and found success at the front of the pack, as freshman Will Carroll (3rd, 1:57.25) and sophomore Sydney Burton (3rd, 2:13.77) both gifted the Wildcats with solid performances on the track.
Over the two-day stretch in Lawrence, Kansas, the Wildcats scored four-individual wins, as the team earned two victories each day inside Anschultz Pavilion.
With the Jayhawk Classic in the books, K-State will now return home for a two-day stint inside Ahearn Field House, as both teams will prepare for the Austra Skujyte Pentathlon and Steve Fritz Heptathlon on Friday, January 29, and then the DeLoss Dodds Invitational will take place on Saturday, January 30.
"Next week, we compete at home," Rovelto stated. "Included in that meet is a pentathlon and heptathlon. For those athletes, this will be one of the few opportunities to contest in their specialty. We go on the road to Arkansas and Texas Tech the following two weekends, so the next week will also be the last opportunity to cement their spot on the travel roster."
