
K-State Prepares for Two Separate Conference Road Trips Beginning Friday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field teams will head to separate conference locations this week with the Texas Tech Shootout taking place on Friday, February 12 through Saturday, February 13, while another group will travel to Ames, Iowa for the second portion of the Iowa State Classic on Saturday, February 13.
Friday's schedule for the Texas Tech Shootout will begin at 3 p.m., CT, with Saturday's slate kicking off at 11 a.m., CT. Saturday's action at the Iowa State Classic gets going at 12 p.m., CT.
"We will be sending the distance group to Iowa State this weekend except a couple of the 800-meter girls," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Our jumps, sprints and throws group will be going to Texas Tech. Both meets will be competitive and we look forward to improving our marks heading towards conference and nationals."
Both Iowa State and Texas Tech own top-15 spots in the USTFCCCA National Men's Rating Index, as the Red Raiders hold the No. 4 ranking and the Cyclones sitting at No. 15 this week. Texas Tech's women's team also owns a national ranking in the USTFCCCA poll at No. 10.

Fans wanting to follow along with both meets this weekend can use the live results link provided by Prime Time Timing. There will also be a live stream on Big 12 Now on ESPN + for the Texas Tech Shootout. Saturday's event schedule for the Iowa State Classic will have a live stream provided by FloTrack.
Under COVID-19 guidelines, no fans or spectators will be allowed inside either of the Sports Performance Center and Lied Recreation Center this weekend.

Gale Keeps Rewriting History
Freshman Kyle Gale won the 400-meter race at the Arkansas Qualifier last week in convincing fashion. For those who have put on the purple and white in the past, Gale's victory had bigger implications for the K-State record books. With his time of 46.26 seconds in the 400 meters, Gale snatched the school record, which was previously set for the last 24 years by former Wildcat Keith Black, who posted a time of 46.44 in 1997. Gale's performance now ranks 10th in the NCAA for the 400 meters.
Checking in at No. 23
In this week's USTFCCCA National Rating Index, both Wildcats men's and women's teams were ranked 23rd in the national poll. The women's team entered the poll for the first time this indoor season, while the men's group has now held a spot in the national rankings for the last three weeks.
NCAA Leaderboard
The Wildcats continue to hold spots at the top of the NCAA leaderboard in many individual events this indoor season. As the indoor season hits its stride, K-State remains in the top 15 nationally in several events. Some of those athletes who have contributed to those rankings include freshman Kyle Gale (No. 10, 400 Meters), senior Tejaswin Shankar (No. 3, High Jump; No. 7, Heptathlon), junior Anigbata Grace Chinonyelum (No. 5, Triple Jump), junior Vitoria Alves (No. 15, 60m Hurdles), sophomore Maddie Righter (No. 15, High Jump) and senior Taishia Pryce (No. 9, Long Jump).
USTFCCCA Top-10 Marks of the Week (Feb. 2-8)
Another batch of Wildcats found themselves in the USTFCCCA Top-10 Marks of the Week for the week of February 2-8, as five athletes earned national recognition for their respective events after competing in the Arkansas Qualifier. Those athletes include freshman Kyle Gale (No. 7, 400 Meters), junior Vitoria Alves (No. 8, 60m Hurdles), freshman Rhianna Phipps (No. 4, Triple Jump), junior Anigbata Grace Chinonyelum (No. 1, Triple Jump) and senior Taishia Pryce (No. 2, Long Jump).
Grace Leaves Her Mark in Fayetteville
With a leap of 13.61m/44-8.00 during the triple jump event, junior Anigbata Grace Chinonyelum boosted herself to No. 5 in the NCAA with her winning mark, while also setting the Arkansas Qualifier meet record last Friday. Chinonyelum hs improved her personal best in each event she has participated for the triple jump, which has now resulted in her climbing up to No. 3 all-time in school history for the indoor season.
Lied Recreation Center Success
During the 2020 indoor campaign, the Wildcats earned six first-place performances in two events last year at the Lied Recreation Center, located in Ames, Iowa. Three Wildcats saw their names at the top spot in the leaderboard for their respective events at last year's Iowa State Classic, as seniors Cameron Lewis (Shot Put), Ariel Okorie (60-Meter Hurdles) and Tejaswin Shankar (High Jump) recorded top outings for K-State in the annual meet.
A few weeks later, K-State returned to the Lied Recreation Center on February 28-29, 2020 to compete in the Big 12 Indoor Championship. Over the two-day stint, another trio of athletes captured conference titles for K-State, as Shankar, junior Kassidy Johnson (1000 Meters) and senior Lauren Taubert (Pentathlon) delivered pivotal victories.

The Wildcats will turn their focus to the Steve Miller Open on Friday, February 20 inside Ahearn Field House. This will be the final home meet of the indoor season for K-State in 2021.
