Phipps, Shankar Clinch Meet Records as K-State Completes Road Trip at Texas Tech, Iowa State on Saturday

Feb 13, 2021 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Competing in the final sessions of the Texas Tech Shootout and Iowa State Classic, the Kansas State track and field teams concluded each meet with successful outings in the field and in the distance events, which included meet records by senior Tejaswin Shankar and freshman Rhianna Phipps on Saturday (February 13) afternoon.

"As a group, we competed well in the horizontal jumps," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Some PR's and some struggles but what matters is head-to-head competition, and I think we fared well."

Phipps and Shankar wreaked havoc down at the Texas Tech Shootout, as both athletes secured first-place finishes and meet records in their respective events.

Phipps, who is from Saint Thomas, Jamaica, broke the triple jump meet record with a mark of 13.52m/44-4.25 inside the Sports Performance Center on Saturday. Former Wildcat Shardia Lawrence had previously owned the record for over two years with a jump of 13.41m/44-0.00. With her winning jump, Phipps moved up to No. 4 all-time in school history for the event.

In the men's high jump, Shankar proved to be no match yet again, as the New, Delhi, native posted a leap of 2.25m/7-4.50 to secure his spot at the top of the standings and clinch the meet record with his performance.

"TJ (Tejaswin Shankar) nicked up his ankle yesterday in the long jump and wasn't feeling great today but battled through it," said Rovelto.

K-State continued to roll in the triple jump after Phipps' victory with juniors Anigbata Grace Chinonyelum (2nd, 13.29m/43-7.25) and Chantoba Bright (3rd, 13.28m/43-7.00) scoring top-three outings. Bright's jump of 13.28m/43-7.00 also had historical implications, as the junior climbed to No. 6 all-time for the indoor season in school history.

The Wildcats kept climbing into the top-10 list in the 200 meters, as senior Taishia Pryce completed her run with a time of 24.02, which would tie teammate Wurrie Njadoe's mark with the No. 4 spot for school history.

Freshman Kyle Gale exhilarated those in attendance with another spectacle in the 600 yards, as he sprinted into second place with a pace of 1:08.60.

"Kyle (Gale) went out well in the 600 and ran fast but got edged out at the line," Rovelto stated.

The distance runners paced with the best at the Iowa State Classic and scored a few top-10 performances.

Junior Kassidy Johnson got things rolling with a fourth-place finish in the women's mile race at a time of 4:47.67. Sophomore Mike Rohlinger followed with a seventh-place finish in the men's mile run, crossing the line at 4:09.84.

Nothing could stop Hadley Splechter from tearing up the track, as the sophomore posted a fifth-place outing in the men's 3000 meters with a pace of 8:13.54.

The K-State women continued to record fast times as Sydney Burton (9th, 2:12.49, 800 Meters) and Cara Melgares (10th, 10:14.71, 3000 Meters) posted efficient outings in their respective races.

"It's great we are having strong performances and PR's, but the ultimate measure is how we stack up against our conference foes individually and collectively," said Rovelto. "I think we have athletes who can contribute in every event area and that's what I look for in our team."

K-State competes in one last home meet, the Steve Miller Open, on Friday, February 20 inside Ahearn Field House. This will be the final tune up for the Wildcats before the Big 12 Indoor Championship on February 26-27 in Lubbock, Texas.
