Medaled Finishes Close Out the Big 12 Indoor Championships

AMES, Iowa – The Kansas State track and field team took home numerous podium finishes at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday (February 26) at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa.
The K-State men's team earned a total of 61 points and placed sixth and the women's team collected 56 points and finished in seventh. Texas swept the competition and was first overall on both the men's side (171) and women's side (136).
"It is all about the team effort," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Clearly, a lot of people rose to the occasion. As a group, I thought we competed really well. There were some really outstanding marks today."
Fifth-year senior Tejaswin Shankar jumped his way to the runner-up spot in the men's high jump with a height of 2.20m/7-2.50. Fourth and fifth place went to freshman Kamyren Garrett and junior Devon Richardson, who had the same height of 2.17m/7-1.50, a personal-best for both. Rounding out for K-State was fifth-year senior Kyle Alcine in sixth place with a mark of 2.14m/7-0.25.
Junior Sydney Burton had a tough battle in the women's 1,000-meter run. The Abilene, Kansas native clocked in at 2:49.04 and medaled in second place.
A school record in the 800-meter on an oversized track advanced junior Kassidy Johnson to a third-place finish with a time of 2:04.00 flat.
"Kassidy has really contributed a lot in her four years," said Rovelto. "She has really risen to the occasion at all of our conference meets."
Tying for first in program history on an oversized track in the 200-meter was freshman Kavian Kerr. He recorded a time of 20.99 in the finals and medaled in fourth place.
"Any time a freshmen scores at this meet, it is pretty good," stated Rovelto. "Kavian is an extremely talented athlete and he really did a great job."
In the men's heptathlon, freshman Emil Uhlin earned 5,639 points, a personal-best, and received a medal with a third-place finish. Freshman Carl af Forselles was close behind Uhlin in fourth place with a personal-best 5,586.
Earning a spot-on podium and clinching third place with a time of 1:08.97 in the 600-yard dash was freshman Antonio Hanson. Hanson's time ranks him second in program history on an oversized track.
It was fourth place for K-State in the women's 4x400-meter relay. The squad, consisting of O'Shalia Johnson, Shalysa Wray, Alex Ferguson and Macy Heinz, ran a time of 3:40.06.
Sixth place in the men's mile finals went to junior Hadley Splechter. With a time of 4:02.98, Splechter now ranks second in program history on an oversized track.
In the women's 3,000-meter final, junior Jaybe Shufelberger won her heat and was sixth overall with a time of 9:43.57.
"I am really proud of our distance runners and mid-distance runners," said distance coach Ryun Godfrey. "It is always good to see both upperclassmen and underclassmen. It was a good experience for our younger group, and they stepped up."
K-State claimed seventh and eighth place in the women's 400-meter finals. Wray finished in seventh place (54.01) while Johnson was right behind her in eight (54.06).
Ferguson ran her way to a time of 1:22.21 in the women's 600-yard run and finished eighth overall.
Clocking in at 8.80 in the women's 60-meter hurdles final was junior Vitoria Sena Batista Alves, finishing in eighth place.
The Wildcats will take a week off before sending a few representatives to Birmingham, Alabama for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 11 and 12.
