K-State Dominates on Day One of Ward Haylett Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team had impressive performances on the first day of the Ward Haylett Invitational at the R.V. Christian Track on Friday (May 6). The Wildcats placed first in six events.
"It was a great night for a meet and the team took advantage of it," stated assistant coach Ryun Godfrey. "We had a number of personal records tonight. We are on the eve of finals – the team does a great job of balancing their academic and athletics."
Starting off the day was the women's javelin throw. Crushing her personal best mark by nearly seven meters was junior Urte Bacianskaite. She clinched first place with a heave of 47.20m. Second, third and fourth went to K-State with junior Madeline Righter in second (42.86m), junior Baylee Unruh in third (39.47m) and junior Briana Lowe in fourth (39.06m). Closing out for K-State was sophomore Katelyn Young in sixth (36.11m)
Junior Sean Wilson recorded a time of 47.89 in the men's 400-meter dash and came in first place. Fifth year senior Travis Hodge placed third with a time of 49.63 and sophomore Will Carroll finished with a personal best time of 50.01, finishing in fourth. Rounding out for K-State was junior Kyle Johnston with a personal best time of 50.86 (fifth) and sophomore Ryan Derry in sixth (50.90).
The Wildcats dominated in the women's 400-meter dash with senior Alex Ferguson clocking in at a personal best 55.15 and placing first overall. Fifth year senior Macy Heinz was right behind Ferguson in second with a personal best of 55.37 while sophomore Jessica Caraway ended the race in fourth place with a time of 1:01.17.
K-State only had one representative in the women's 1,500-meter and that was junior Cailan Steward. The Andover, Kansas native ran a time of 4:44.03, a personal best, and won the event.
In the women's 5,000-meter run, first and second place went to K-State. First place went to junior Katie Kasunic with a time of 18:27.27 and second place was awarded to freshman Kate Kowalik, clocking in at 18:52.32.
Finishing five seconds ahead of second place in the men's 5,000-meter run was junior Jack Moore. The Olathe, Kansas native ran a personal best time of 14:38.71, putting him in first place.
After a stellar performance at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout last weekend, junior Hadley Splechter moves up in the record books for K-State. Splechter ran a personal best time of 3:42.97 and earned second in the 1,500-meter run, just .06 seconds behind Brett Meyer in first place. His time puts him at fourth in program history. Fifth year senior Noah Stevenson finished the race right behind Splechter in third with a time of 3:45.14 while senior Stephen Kielhofner placed fourth and clocked in at 3:50.42, a personal best.
Finishing the day was the men's javelin throw. Fifth year senior Tejaswin Shankar represented the Wildcats and placed fifth with a mark of 45.58m.
The Ward Haylett Invitational will continue in Manhattan, Kansas on Saturday (May 7) with the women's high jump at 10:00 a.m. Before the start of the running events, there will be a ceremony to highlight the 17 seniors and their impact on the K-State Track and Field program at 12:15 p.m.
