Wildcats Continue to Excel on Senior Day at Ward Haylett Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team kept the momentum on the second day of the Ward Haylett Invitational on Saturday (April 7) at the R.V. Christian Track. K-State concluded the day with eight first place marks.
"Fortunately, we had a couple of great days of weather and a number of athletes took advantage of the opportunity and turned in some nice performances," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "This meet is the final opportunity for athletes to make our conference championship team and we had a few step up and make a strong case for themselves. This senior class is relatively large and made up of athletes that have been in the program as little as a year and as much as six years. This group has had a significant impact contributing to a couple of conference championships on the women's side, school records and All-American performances and an individual national championship. They will be missed!"
K-State started off the day strong with a personal best mark by freshman Darius O'Connell in the men's shot put. O'Connell had a heave of 16.68m/54-8.75, putting him in first place. Right behind him was sophomore Jackson Gibbon in second place with a throw of 15.65m/51-4.25.
In the men's discus throw, fifth year senior Tejaswin Shankar threw to a mark of 36.67m/120-4, placing first and earning a new personal best mark.
Highlighting the men's high jump was a first-place finish by freshman Kamyren Garrett with a height of 2.11m/6-11. Not fair behind in second place was freshman Emil Uhlin with a personal best height of 2.06m/6-9.
Making her way to first place in the women's pole vault was senior Tommi Hintnaus. The ASU transfer reached a height of 4.05m/13-3.50 and came in first place. Sophomore Reagan Hukill placed fourth with a height of 3.75m/12-3.50.
With a time of 13.78 in the women's 100-meter hurdles, junior Vitoria Sena Batista Alves finished in first.
Following Alves was the men's 110-meter hurdles where Shankar won the event in 14.68 seconds.
Clocking in with a new personal best time of 10.70 and placing first in the men's 100-meter dash was senior Carson Lackey. Behind Lackey was senior Parker McCafferty in fourth with a personal best time of 11.02. Junior Nathan Hassed matched his personal best record of 11.04 and came in fifth while freshman Prithviraj Chougule rounded out for K-State in sixth with a personal best time of 11.04.
There was a pack of Wildcats in the women's 800-meter run, Junior Kassidy Johnson came in first (2:05.81) while senior Alex Ferguson came in second (2:07.71), fifth year senior Macy Heinz in third (2:09.24), sophomore Jessica Caraway in sixth (2:19.03) and Cailan Steward in ninth (2:23.14) with a personal best time.
Representing the Wildcats in the women's high jump was junior Madeline Righter. The Olathe, Kansas native placed second with a height of 1.61m/5-3.25.
Four Wildcats competed in the women's shot put. Leading the event was sophomore Grace Thomspon with a personal best throw of 15.24m/50-0, placing second. Next up was sophomore Jaycee Schroeder in third (14.66m/48-1.25), followed by sophomore Jasmine Greer in fourth (14.60m/47-11) and junior Urte Bacianskaite in fifth (14.25m/46-9)
Sophomore Emily Fuhr took home third place in the women's discus throw with a mark of 43.56m/142-11.
With a personal best leap of 5.72m/18-9.25, freshman Madelyn McCabe claimed third place in the women's long jump event.
K-State fought hard in the men's 800-meter run. Fifth year senior Travis Hodge ended the race in third (1:52.61), sophomore Ryan Derry was tenth (1:56.18) and junior Kyle Johnston came in 11th (1:56.36).
Junior Kindel Nordhus finished the 400-meter hurdles in third place with a time of 1:04.99. In the men's division junior Gabriel Louw also placed third with a time of 57.68.
Sophomore Brian Simon competed in the men's pole vault and came in fourth place with a height of 4.65m/15-3.
Closing out the day for the Wildcats was the men's 200-meter dash. McCafferty led the K-State pack in third place, recording a time of 22.64. Chougule had a personal best time of 22.84 and placed fourth while Hassed was in fifth with a time of 22.88.
K-State will head off to Lubbock, Texas for the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 13-15 at the Fuller Track and Field. Friday's (May 13) events will commence at 11 a.m. CT with the women's hammer throw.
