Six Top-5 Finishes Highlight Day 1 of Big 12 Championship

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Jasmine Greer's runner-up finish in the women's weight throw highlighted six top-5 finishes by Kansas State on the first day of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (Feb. 24) at the Sports Performance Center.
After the first day of the Big 12 Championships, the women's team was 3rd with 34 points after 6 events, while the men's team sits in 9th with 7 points after 5 events. Oklahoma State leads the women's field with 68 points, while Kansas leads the men's competition with 41 points.
Greer threw a massive personal best of 20.63m/67-8.25 in the weight throw, beating her previous best of 19.59m/64-3.25 at last year's indoor championship. She was joined in the top-5 by junior Emma Robbins (3rd; 20.31m/66-7.75) and sophomore Monique Hardy (4th; 19.88m/65-2.75).
Three other Wildcats placed in the top-5 in the respective events, including juniors Urte Bacianskaite (3rd; 4,028 points) in the women's pentathlon, Shalom Olotu (3rd; 6.18m/20-3.50) in the women's long jump and Kade McCall (4th; 20.68m/67-10.25) in the men's weight throw.
Two runners advanced to the final round of running events on Saturday afternoon, as junior Sydney Burton finished 9th in the women's preliminary mile with a time of 4:51.65, the last qualifying time, and junior Shalysa Wray finished 7th in the women's preliminary 400 meter dash in 53.59 seconds.
The morning started off with the women's pentathlon, as Bacianskaite led three Wildcats in the competition with a new personal-best total of 4,028 points to place third. The total bested her previous high by over 200 points at the Carol Robinson Women's Winter Pentathlon on Dec. 9. Sophomore Madelyn McCabe also recorded her new pentathlon personal best by a single point to finish in 7th place with 3,736 points, while junior Maddie Righter competing in her first pentathlon placed 11th with 3,410 points.
Bacianskaite excelled in the shot put, winning with a distance of 14.59m/47-10.50. In the same event McCabe (4th; 12.65m/41-6) and Righter (6th; 11.73m/38-6) completed new personal bests. In the high jump Righter and McCabe finished in the top-5 with Righter finishing 3rd at 1.71m/5-7.25 and McCabe placing 5th at 1.68m/5-6.
Also in the combined events, sophomore Emil Uhlin started competition in the men's heptathlon, placing 7th out of 10 athletes with 2,816 points after four of the seven events. His highest mark of the day was finishing 3rd in the high jump with a height of 1.97m/6-5.50.
The second and final day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 25) begin at 11 a.m., CT which include the final round of running events and three field events, the shot put, triple jump and high jump competitions.
