MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State men's golf team will continue its spring season at the Colleton River Collegiate on Monday and Tuesday on the par-72, 7,085-yard Jack Nicklaus Course at the Colleton River Club in Bluffton, South Carolina.
"We are excited to be back at Colleton River," said head coach Grant Robbins. "It's a tournament our players always look forward to. The golf course is phenomenal, and the support that this event has from the club members really make it a great experience."Â
Representing the Wildcats in the five-man scoring lineup are Will Hopkins, Tim Tillmanns, Laurenz Schiergen, Nicklaus Mason, and Luke O'Neill. Cooper Schultz will be competing as an individual.Â
Last season in the Colleton River Collegiate, K-State finished in third place at 20-under par 844. Individually, O'Neill tied for first place by carding a 14-under par 202, which is tied for the fourth lowest individual 54-hole score in school history.
The course is a challenge that Robbins and the Cats are excited for.
"The greens are really good, and if you drive it well you are able to set up a lot of birdie opportunities," said Robbins. "The par 3's are a challenge. If we can play those reasonably well and take advantage of the par 5's, then we should be right there."Â
K-State is coming off a third-place finish at the Hal Williams Collegiate where the Wildcats shot a 13-under par 839, the ninth best 54-hole score in school history. Hopkins led the Wildcats at the spring opener, tying for sixth place at 7-under par 206.Â
This trip south to Bluffton will be the first of a two-tournament stretch in the region as the Wildcats will also compete in the Sea Island Invitational on March 14 and 15.Â
Joining Kansas State and host school Michigan State in a 12-team field is No. 25 Cincinnati, No. 24 Georgia Southern, Indiana, Iowa State, No. 21 Kansas State Memphis, Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 46 Missouri, Minnesota, No. 28 Ohio State, Penn State, and Rutgers.Â
The first two rounds of the 54-hole event will begin Monday at 7:15 a.m. (CT), while the final round will start at 7 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday. Both days will begin with a shotgun start.Â
