Cats Earn Runner-Up Finish at Colleton River

Mar 07, 2023 | Men's Golf

BLUFFTON, S.C. - The No. 21 Kansas State men's golf team finished in second place at 32-under par 832 after the final round of the Colleton River Collegiate on Tuesday, as Nicklaus Mason also earned a runner-up finish on the individual leaderboard.

The Wildcats led for a majority of the tournament, but a late rally from No. 24 Georgia Southern foiled their title hopes. K-State carded an even-par 288 final round at the par-72, 7,085-yard Colleton River Club, but the Cats finished two strokes behind the Eagles, who shot a 7-under par 281 round to clinch the victory.

"Overall, it was a good tournament for us," said head coach Grant Robbins. "We are disappointed in the outcome, especially because of the way we played toward the end. To win tournaments against good teams you have to be able to close. Georgia Southern hit a lot of clutch shots and made putts, and we didn't. Give credit to them. They've got a really good team. This is a tournament we feel we should have won, but we will learn from it. This is definitely an experience that will make us better."

Despite the conclusion, the Wildcats still recorded their best 54-hole score of the season and eighth best in school history. It is also the fifth top-five finish in a season that has already seen K-State win three team championships.

Mason finished one stroke off of tying Michigan State's August Meekhof for the individual title, but he tied for second place at 10-under par 205 after shooting a 1-over par 73 third round.

For the sophomore from Shawnee, Kansas, it is the highest finish of his career and lowest-ever score. His performance was highlighted by a career-low round of 7-under par 65 in Monday's morning round and 16 birdies to tie for the most in the tournament.

This is Mason's fourth top-five finish of his career and third of the season, which is a team best.

Will Hopkins tied for 13th place at 7-under par 209 to earn his 16th career top-20 finish and fifth of the season. The senior shot an even-par 72 final round.

Cooper Schultz, who was competing as an individual, also tied for 13th place at 7-under par 209. He carded a 3-under par 69 final round to move up 14 spots on the leaderboard and claim his fourth top-20 finish this season.

Laurenz Schiergen and Tim Tillmanns both finished at 5-under par 211 and tied for 23rd place. Schiergen shot a 1-under par 71 in the third round, while Tillmanns shot an even-par 72.

Luke O'Neill tied for 34th place at 3-under par 213 following a 3-over par 75 final round.

The five Wildcats in the scoring lineup finished with 13 even-under par rounds, the most of any lineup this season. They led the tournament with 64 birdies as a team.

Kansas State will stick around the south for the Sea Island Invitational, held in Sea Island, Georgia on March 14 and 15. The Wildcats have four regular-season events remaining on their spring schedule before the Big 12 Championship commences on April 24.
