Wildcats Show Strong Performances in Ward Haylett Invitational

The Big 12 Championships begin on Friday May 12 through Sunday May 14
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men's and women's track and field dominated the Ward Haylett Invitational on Saturday (May 6), as eight Wildcats won their events, including both the women's and men's 400 and 1,500 meters, at R.V. Christian Track.
In addition to the eight first-place finishes, 17 Wildcats also ended the day with new personal bests.
Distance runners started the day winning events as junior Jack Moore won the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 15:36.14. Junior Sydney Burton and senior Stephen Kielhofner each won their 1,500-meter race, as Burton came in with a time of 4:35.18 and Kielfhofner followed with a time of 3:49.87.
Later in the day during the sprints, freshman Twaneise Johnson and junior Kyle Gale swept the 400-meter dash with Johnson coming in at a time of 56.58 second and Gale at 46.31.
Other first-place finishes on the day included junior Urte Bacianskaite in the women's long jump with a new personal-best mark of 6.22m/20-5, junior Jesse Pinkley in the men's pole vault with a new person-best height of 5.14m/16-10.25 and junior Shalysa Wray won the 200 meter dash in 23.33 seconds.
Bacianskaite also finished second in the women's 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best 14.08 seconds.
Multiple distance athletes completed new bests, as freshman Katie Schwartzkopf ran in the women's 1,500 meters for the first time with a seventh place time of 4:52.69 and sophomore Kate Kowalik placed ninth in her first attempt in 5:13.29. Sophomore Matthew Hauser also ran a new 1,500 meters best to record a second-place finish with a time of 3:50.30. Senior Ryan Derry ran his fastest 800 meters at 1:54.32.
The field athletes saw some of their best performances of the outdoor season, as freshman Lindsey DeWitt recorded her best height in the women's high jump in fifth place at 1.66m/5-5.25. Freshman Jhavor Bennett had a significant new personal best by 18 inches in the men's long jump at 6.96m/22-10 (+2.4) to place fifth. Junior Jaycee Schroeder finished fourth in the women's shot put with a throw of 15.37m/50-5.25, a new best from April 2022 when she threw a 14.95m/49-0.75.
The Wildcat heptathletes competed in multiple events, as freshman Delaney Wright also recorded a new personal best in the women's long jump at 5.78m/18-11.75. In the women's 100 meter hurdles, junior Maddie Righter finished third at 14.36 and Wright in fourth at 14.68, both new personal bests.
A couple of sprinters also performed well on Saturday, as junior O'Shalia Johnson finished right behind Wray in second at 23.74 seconds in the women's 200 meters and sophomore Darian Clarke took second in the men's 200 meter in 20.99 seconds. Sophomore Ludivine Aubert recorded another 400 meter hurdles personal best for consecutive weeks, this time in second place at 1:01.03.
The Wildcats will start postseason competition in the Big 12 Championships on Friday (May 12) through Sunday (May 14) in Norman, Okla., at the John Jacobs Track & Field Complex.
