K-State Records Second Straight Big 12 Draw

Oct 06, 2024 | Soccer

AMES, Iowa – K-State looked to capture its first Big 12 win of the 2024 season against Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at Cyclone Sports Park. The Wildcats would come away with its second straight league draw in a 0-0 decision with the Cyclones.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (3-7-3, 0-4-2 Big 12) nearly broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Freshman Langley Mayers tracked the ball down near the end line. She lofted a pass toward the center of the field and found sophomore forward Ryann Reynolds. Reynolds redirected the orb with her abdomen with the Cyclone goalkeeper out of position. The ball nearly crossed the line, but a Cyclone defender flailed her leg at the attempt and kicked it before it could cross the goal line.
- The Wildcats had a pair of late quality opportunities to register the game-winning goal. In the 88th minute, junior Sophie Simmons drove all the way to the end line before playing a ball back to senior Riley Baker. Baker put a solid attempt towards the frame but Iowa State goalkeeper Avery Gillahan battled the sun to catch the shot.
- Shortly after Baker's shot, K-State won a free kick roughly 35 yards from the Cyclone net. Junior Ally Brown thumped her free kick attempt on a line, with a strong wind at her back, but the shot went just over the crossbar.
- Iowa State (3-6-4, 1-2-2) had a last second chance as time was expiring but Morgan Furmaniak's attempt went wide of the right post from 16 yards out.
- The teams were equal in total shots at 18, while K-State held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats tallied a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. The nine corner kicks by K-State were a season-high.
- K-State junior goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff made four comfortable saves on the day. This was Sheaff's second career Big 12 shutout and her first since October 5, 2023, against Houston.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On keeping possession of the ball for the majority of a match for the second straight match…
"We're sticking to the way we want to play in terms of the attack and the identity. We are creating some good chances. We just need to execute our chances a little bit better. And this game obviously showed that we had some good opportunities, we just couldn't get the ball to bounce our way. We just couldn't get one to go in today. We'll take the point and move forward."

On the season-high 9 corner kicks…
"Scoring goals is a challenge and winning games is a challenge, but we did create a lot of chances because we were doing the little things and focusing on the details of how to get corner kicks. That's driving the ball down a little bit more, and maybe getting our second chance opportunities, like we did today. We need to begin to capitalize on those chances."

On the depth of the roster…
"It's great to have some depth and showing that we have depth in certain positions. It's hard to replace the players we have lost that you know could have helped impact this, but we have been getting looks at a lot of players that are contributing solid minutes and impacting us in different ways."
