FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Colleen Corbin
On tonight's complete performance…
"I think the maturity of our group. We score early again, continue to put us on the front foot, which is great. The moment from Allison Marshall drawing the red card from their goalkeeper, like that was an individual choice to go and gamble and take a risk, and that's obviously kind of what our season's been about so far. So there's a lot of really great moments in the very beginning part of the game that I think set the rest of the match up for success. But I also was really proud of just our defensive effort overall. It's something that we really built our identity in as our press and our defending mentality, and just having individual moments work out for us because of our work, our energy, our competitiveness, and so it just really felt like a complete performance today. Credit to South Dakota State again; they're an incredibly competitive program historically, and I know that they'll do great things this year, and they still cause us problems even when they're a man down. So good for us to walk out of this and learn some lessons while still getting a result."
On Langley Mayers' goal and assist today after missing last season…
"I mean Langley Mayers has an incredible story, right? She didn't play all of last fall, and that can be really challenging. You don't really have a true timeline on your return to play, and so her ability to stay focused on her goals, recover and come back in the spring and prepare at an incredibly high level and train at a really high level, and then come ready in the summer to compete and earn that spot in the first 11. Not only earn the spot but really be pulling strings, dictating the tempo for us. Just delighted for her to score a goal because that kid, again, she works harder than anybody, so just incredibly happy for her and happy for us that she's back."
On locking in the backline for the rest of the season…
"Our shape shifted a little bit in the beginning of the game, and so normally we play with a four-back, and we ended up in a three-back, and it's good for us to continue to get reps and looks and minutes in that shape because we may or may not end up in that shape again over the next couple months. I'm just really proud again of the resilience, the composure, the maturity of all the kids on the field to be adaptable. They're adjusting in real time, and that's all you can ask from them. So again, just proud, really happy for the girls to see goals hit the back of the net, and also to continue to preserve shutouts."
FROM THE FIELD
K-State Junior Goalkeeper Maddie Sibbing
On holding the record for the most career shutouts in K-State history…
"I actually didn't know until I got to warm up, and one of the camera people came up and told me. But I think it means a lot to me, just because I've had such a long college soccer journey. But I think it's also a testament to our entire backline. They're incredible, doing everything they can to keep the ball from even getting to me. I'm just very proud of all of us."
On what she likes about how this season has started…
"We talked about scoring more goals this season a lot because last season that was just something we wanted to work on, and we've seen a lot of goals this season so far, which is really exciting. I'm excited to see more."
On the backline this season…
"They just put everything on the line to keep the ball from getting behind them."
K-State Sophomore Midfielder Langley Mayers
On the pace change throughout the game…
"We switched formations after about 10 minutes into a 3-5-2, and that helped us match their formation as well. And I think we knew that we could take their athleticism. We're very confident in ourselves, and so we knew when we switched into that, we felt even more confident, matching person to person with them. So I think once we did that, we were able to find a mojo and a tempo to be able to start attacking."
On getting her goal after missing last season due to injury…
"It was just really exciting. I wanted to get back. I never knew really when I was going to get back, just because it was a concussion, so you don't really know a timeline. Having that goal in the back of my mind was what helped me through the recovery process. And then being able to score and assist and help my team win tonight helped me get excited for the rest of the season and continue to contribute and help my team out."
