K-State Narrowly Edged in Upset Bid of (24) West Virginia

Oct 19, 2025 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State looked to improve its unbeaten streak to four and spring the upset on (24) West Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Buser Family Park, but the Mountaineers held back the Wildcats with a 3-2 decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (7-5-3, 2-4-2 Big 12) went in front, 1-0, in the 30th minute. Redshirt freshman defender Chloe Dillbeck played a cross from the left sideline. The pass found a hard-charging Rilyn Rintoul, as the junior forward crashed the front step of the frame and pushed the ball past the Mountaineer goalkeeper.
- This was Rintoul's third goal of the season, while Dillbeck collected her first career assist.
- West Virginia (10-2-3, 5-0-3 Big 12) squared the match, 1-1, in the 44th minute, as Kailyn Effah intercepted a K-State clearance from inside the six-yard box and poked the ball into goal.
- The Wildcats outshot the Mountaineers in the first half, 5-3.
- The Mountaineers broke the 1-1 tie in the 82nd minute. Maya Leoni served her corner kick into the box. A jumble of players in front the frame resulted in Taylor White poking the ball into the net.
- West Virginia added a needed insurance goal in the 84th minute, as White floated a shot from the right side of the field from 18 yards and found the upper left corner for her 10th goal of the season and second of the game.
- K-State charged back to make the margin, 3-2. Sophomore defender Emerson DeLuca played her throw-in to junior midfielder McKinnan Braswell roughly 25 yards from goal. Braswell found herself open and fired a left-footed rocket into the upper left corner in the 86th minute.
- The goal was the first of Braswell's K-State career and the second of her collegiate career. The assist for DeLuca was her first career helper.
- K-State ended the afternoon with a 14-10 advantage in total shots and a 5-3 lead in shots on goal. West Virginia held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Colleen Corbin

On the message to your team…
"We're really disappointed. We felt like, on the day, we set the tone. We had control of the game, the goals we gave up, we felt like they were self-inflicted. So that's tough. We didn't feel like again, they did enough to put us under any kind of pressure that was truly scary and so it's a hard lesson for us to learn. That's a team that knows how to win. They've built a culture, and that's something that our team is continuing to partner with, so in the grand scheme of things, like, it isn't the end of the world. We're bummed to not get three points, and especially at this time of year, those are points that matter, but there's still soccer left on the table, and just like any other time, we'll go back, we'll regroup, watch the film, and we'll take whatever lessons we need to take away from it, and we'll move on."

On frustration to lose a game that you ultimately controlled…
"It's really frustrating, especially again, against a top-25 team that's ranked in the top-10 in the RPI (Rating Percentage Index). We felt like on the day, our soccer was better than theirs, and that's tough. It was a really tough pill to swallow. We felt like our game plan was great. We feel like our scouts were great. And so again, just to feel like that one slipped away is a big bummer. But again, testament to West Virginia, because they found a way to win a game, and that's ultimately all that matters."

On pressure being the focal point…
"We didn't feel like any team they had played had really put them under a ton of pressure and really pressed them for 90 minutes. And so that was a big part of our game plan, and obviously it's a huge part of our identity as a program. We felt like that was going really well. We felt like it was working, it was causing them problems, and it was generating chances for us. It's reassuring to know that we continue to see our identity in these games. Just finding that next level of maturity to close out a match."

On how the team recovered from trailing by two goals late…
"It's always nice to see, again, a little bit of resilience and a little bit of grit, but again, you hope that you don't put yourself in that position where now you have to dig yourself out of a hole that you put yourself in. Proud of McKinnan (Braswell) for putting the team on her back and hitting a laser beam to bring us within one but again, at that point, it's unfortunately a little too late. And again, when you create problems for yourself, it gets a lot harder to get out of those holes but again, good to see some bite, good to see some grit, and hopefully we can just ride that into next weekend."

FROM THE FIELD
K-State Junior Midfielder McKinnan Braswell

On her first goal at K-State…
"Honestly, it's a great goal, and it's great to get stats for your personal self, but at the end of the day, it still sucks to know that you have more left in the tank to finish and actually get the job done."

On the final result…
"I think, kind of like Colleen (Corbin) said, I think our game plan was successful. I think we played really well, and I don't think that team was better than us. They were incredible competitors, and they found a way to win. And that's really frustrating for us, especially being at home, but I mean, we just have to get to our chances, and we have to roll with what we got."

On her energy on the field…
"Honestly, that's my faith in Jesus, that's who I play for, that's who I worship. You know, if you come out here, this is your joy, this is a gift, I get to do this and do it with people that I love, like, that's where my energy comes from."

On the team going forward into next week…
"I think, like, there's still more left in us. We still have the opportunity to do whatever we want with the rest of the season, as long as we look for the next game like Thursday's coming up."
