MANHATTAN, Kan. – Four different Bearcats drove in two runs to lead Cincinnati to a 11-7 victory over K-State to even the series at Tointon Family Stadium.
K-State (8-6, 1-1 Big 12) erased a four-run deficit to take a 7-6 lead in the fourth, courtesy of a bases clearing double by Nick English. However, a two-run single by Hunter Jessee scored the game-winning run in the fifth while the Cincinnati (9-6, 1-1 Big 12) bullpen kept the Wildcats scoreless over the final five innings.
"The difference a day makes," said head coach Pete Hughes said. "You have to play with a lead and keep it at home, especially in a series clinching game."
"We were inefficient offensively, defensively and on the mound. I believe our guys will bounce back. They're so resilient and always hold each other to a higher standard of play," Hughes said.
Left-hander Adam Arther took the loss after throwing two innings and allowing three runs (two earned), all coming in the fifth inning. Josh Wintroub allowed six runs, all earned, on five hits with five strikeouts during his 2 2/3 inning start.
English and Kyan Lodice led the Wildcats with two hits each. English drove in a game-high three RBI followed by Brendan Jones with two.
Ryan Insco was rewarded the victory in relief, allowing three earned runs on three hits in his 2 1/3 innings of work (2-0).
THE RUNDOWN
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the second with a pair of walks and single by David Bishop and was followed up by a two-run single by Brendan Jones.
Cincinnati responded in its half of the third, as a hit by pitch scored the team's first run of the series, leading off the Bearcats' six-run inning.
Day and English pieced together back-to-back singles to move into scoring position. Lodice lifted a deep fly ball to center to score Day, before a dropped fly ball made it a two-run game.
A three-run fourth helped K-State take back the lead, 7-6, as English roped a double into left center.
The game turned a corner for the fourth time and final time of the nightcap, as Jessee's single plated the game-winning run.
