Cats Open Stretch Run at Tiger Intercollegiate
Apr 06, 2025 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off over a month's work of practice, the Kansas State men's golf team hits the home stretch of the 2024-25 season by competing each of the next week weeks beginning with the Tiger Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday, at the par-70, 7,158-yard Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri.
Checking in at No. 55 in the latest National Collegiate Golf Rankings, the Wildcats have found success in this event having finished third or better in seven of their last eight trips to The Club at Old Hawthorne.
"We are excited to be back competing again," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We have had an unusually long gap between tournaments. However, it has given us a chance to work on some things and get ready for this final stretch of tournaments before the conference championship. Old Hawthorne is a familiar place that we've had some success at before. It will be set up as a challenging par 70 with a couple of par 5's being converted to difficult par 4's. There is a lot of risk/reward on this course, so it is important to have a good plan and be disciplined with it. We have to be patient, play good solid golf and see what happens."
Joining the Wildcats in Columbia is Central Arkansas, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Drake, Iowa State, Lindenwood, host-school Missouri, Nebraska, North Alabama, Oral Roberts, Saint Mary's, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Stetson, No. 26 UNLV, UTRGV and Wyoming.
Kansas State will use the lineup of seniors Nicklaus Mason, Kobe Valociek and Cooper Schultz in addition to freshman Erik Sabelström Holmberg and junior Alex Lindstrom. Senior Ian McCrary will compete as an individual.
Last time out at the Colleton River Collegiate at the beginning of March, K-State finished second out of 16 teams at 10-over par 874. The Wildcats were led by Schultz and Valociek as each earned top-10 showings. Schultz, who carded a 1-over par 217, tied for sixth place, while Valociek tied for eighth place at 2-over par 218. Mason was one shot back of Valociek and finished in 13th place.
Those three players lead the Wildcats in scoring average this season as Mason is at 70.57, Valociek is at 71.76 and Schultz is at 72.14. Mason's average currently ranks third in school history, while Valociek is 10th. Mason also ranks third in school history with his 72.11 career average, while Schultz is second at 71.87.
Sabelström Holmberg holds a 73.93 scoring average over 14 rounds this season, which includes a tie for second place his last time out at the Colleton River Individual Tournament. Lindstrom will be making his first appearance in the scoring lineup this season and is competing in his third event overall this year.
Two years ago at The Club at Old Hawthorne, K-State finished in third place out of 14 teams at 36-under par 828, a mark that is tied for fifth in school history. Schultz led the Wildcats that year by tying for 10th place.
The first 36 holes of the Tiger Intercollegiate will be contested on Monday beginning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, while Tuesday's final round will also start at 8 a.m. Live results can be viewed on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
