No. 12 West Virginia Evens Series Saturday

May 10, 2025 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – West Virginia rattled off eight unanswered runs to even the series, highlighted by a grand slam from Kyle West, as the No. 12 Mountaineers earned a 10-3 victory over K-State Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.

Through three innings, K-State (29-21, 15-11 Big 12) held a 3-2 lead, only to see the Mountaineers score the next eight runs over a three-inning span, including a six-run fourth inning.

"Baseball games can be determined during any inning of the nine being played, it can be late like last night or it can be in the early stages," head coach Pete Hughes said. "Today we lost the game early. WVU proved to be more efficient with the bases loaded.  That decided the game."

"Looking forward to honoring our mothers and seniors tomorrow and playing great in front of the best fans in college sports," added Hughes.

K-State will honor eight players as part of its Senior Day ceremony prior to the rubber match on Sunday.

In its six-run inning, West launched a grand slam after a pair of WVU (40-9, 19-5 Big 12) singles and hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs. West ended up leading the game with four RBI, while Jace Rinehart went 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored two runs.

The Mountaineers pitching staff of Chase Meyer and Ben McDougal left the Wildcats scoreless after the first two innings. The duo scattered just four hits in the win, with McDougal earning his first victory in relief of Meyer.

Keegan O'Connor led K-State, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Maximus Martin and David Bishop also contributed a hit while Dee Kennedy and Bishop each drove in a run.
