K-State Drops Season Finale at Iowa State

Oct 25, 2018 | Soccer

AMES, Iowa – Kansas State attempted to play spoiler to Iowa State's bid to clinch the final spot in the 2018 Big 12 Championships, but the Cyclones registered a second half goal to capture a 1-0 win on Thursday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

"We learned a lot in terms of what it takes to win those close games," said head coach Mike Dibbini about the 2018 season. "We put ourselves in a position every single match this season to actually compete in those games and show we are capable of trying to win those games. The more experience we give ourselves, the better we will get at it.

We tried to play teams straight up this year. When we made mistakes, the other teams capitalized on them. When we play teams and they make mistakes, we didn't capitalize like we should have. We need to get better in executing those chances. We can't forget that we are trying to do 20-some years of work in year two of Big 12 play. It is not going to happen overnight. It is part of the process. As a team, we have made some huge strides even though it doesn't show in the results."

For the fifth time in Big 12 play this season, Kansas State and its opponent went to halftime scoreless. The Wildcats almost started the scoring in the sixth minute off its first corner kick of the night. Aly Rocha played the corner toward the far-left post. Haley Sutter was able to leap and get her head on the ball, but Iowa State made the team save at the post preventing the goal.

In the opening stanza, Iowa State tallied a 9-5 edge in total shots including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Wildcats held the lead in corner kicks, 5-3.

Iowa State broke the scoring drought for both teams with a goal in the 73rd minute. K-State misplayed a ball in its defending third. Iowa State's Emily Steil pounced on the loose ball and finished in the left side of the net from 17 yards.

The Cyclones ended the night with a 14-9 advantage in total shots, including a 7-2 lead in shots on goal. K-State led in corner kicks, 8-5.

Kansas State concludes its third season of action and its second in the Big 12 with an overall record of 4-12-2 and a league mark of 0-9-0. K-State will look for its second league win in program history in 2019, as the Wildcats will carry a 14-match Big 12 Conference losing streak into the 2019 season.

K-State set school records for total shots (236) and shots on goal (107) in a season and tied the school record for home wins with three.

The Wildcats were led in scoring during the 2018 season by junior Katie Cramer with seven points (two goals and three assists), while sophomore Brookelynn Entz trailed Cramer with six points (two goals and two assists).

K-State will begin play in 2019 at Buser Family Park, following its construction. Season ticket information for the 2019 season will be distributed in the spring.
