Wildcats Improve One Spot on Final Day of K-State BIGHORN Invitational
Mar 24, 2018 | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. – The Kansas State men's golf team carded an even-par 288 on Saturday to advance one spot to a 10th-place finish during the final round of the K-State BIGHORN Invitational at the par-72, 7,000-yard Canyons Course at BIGHORN Golf Club.
The Wildcats recorded a 54-hole score of 8-over par 872, jumping South Alabama on the final day. The Wildcat scoring lineup was led by Ben Fernandez on Saturday, who fired a 3-under par 69 with six birdies on the day, jumping 14 spots to a tie for 42nd at 5-over par 221.
"I was proud of Ben today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "He struggled yesterday but bounced back with a solid round. As a team, we couldn't get anything going. The conditions were perfect for scoring, but we made too many mistakes and couldn't get any momentum going. We have a couple weeks before our next event, so we need to get back to work on Tuesday and get ready for the Tiger Intercollegiate."
Competing as an individual, redshirt freshman Connor Chesky carded a 3-under par 69 on Saturday to jump 10 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 29th at 1-over par 217. Chesky, who was competing in his first event of the year, carded five birdies on the day, which included a bogey-free 2-under on the front nine.
Roland Massimino and Jeremy Gandon each shot even-par 72 on Saturday. Massimino tied for 33rd at 3-over par 219, while Gandon tied for 46th at 6-over par 222. Jacob Eklund and JC Campbell tied for 39th at 4-over par 220.
Also competing as an individual, freshman Kyle Vance finished in 64th at 17-over par 233, while redshirt freshman Matthieu Caron finished in 66th at 20-over par 236.
No. 15 Illinois won the team title at 40-under par 824, which included a 20-under par 268 during the final round. Mississippi State was 10 shots back at 30-under par 834. Four of the Illini's five members of the scoring lineup finished in the top six, including individual winner Bryan Baumgarten, who came in at 11-under par 205.
The Wildcats are back in action April 9-10, in the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri.
