K-State’s Gandon Wins Individual Title at Hawkeye Invitational
Apr 14, 2018 | Men's Golf
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Kansas State junior men's golfer Jeremy Gandon took home his second career tournament win by claiming the individual title at the Hawkeye Invitational following second-round play on Saturday at the par-72, 7,239-yard Finkbine Golf Course. The third round of the tournament was cancelled due to the weather.
With the help of Gandon, who carded an 8-under par 136, the Wildcats shot 17-over par 305 in the final round, finishing in third place at 11-over par 587. It was K-State's second top-three finish this week after placing second at the Tiger Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
"I am so proud of Jeremy," said head coach Grant Robbins. "That was an unbelievable round of golf today in some very tough conditions. I am proud of the team as well. They all had a great attitude and mindset today despite the challenges of the weather.
"We had our chances down the stretch, but we just were not able to make the putts we needed to make in order to win. It is another great experience, however, to be in contention and something that will only make us better."
It was Gandon's second-career win and first since the Golfweek Conference Challenge in September 2015, which was just his second-career tournament. He maintained a solid lead during the second round thanks to five birdies on the day to finish four strokes ahead of Iowa's Alex Schaake.
Ben Fernandez and Roland Massimino tied for 21st place at 6-over par 150. Jacob Eklund moved up nine spots on Saturday as he tied for 40th at 10-over par 154. JC Campbell was unable to duplicate a solid first-round score as he ended play at 13-over par 157 to tie for 54th place.
Iowa State took home the team title with a winning score of 7-over par 583, one stroke ahead of in-state rival and host school Iowa.
Next up for the Wildcats is the 2018 Big 12 Championship, April 22-25, at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
