Sep 23, 2018 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Kansas State senior Roland Massimino turned in a solid third-round score as he carded an even-par 70 on Sunday at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate held at the par-70, 7,081-yard Mirabel Golf Club.
Massimino finished the tournament with a 2-under par 208. The Lumberville, Pennsylvania, native tied for 27th place in his first tournament of the season.
The Wildcats finished 14th as a team, shooting a 15-over par 855 over the three days.
"I was really proud of Roland this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "He missed out on qualifying (for the first tournament) but got an opportunity when Kyle (Vance) got injured, and he made the most of it."
Senior Jeremy Gandon shot an impressive 1-under par 69 during Sunday's final round and moved up three spots to tie for 30th. Junior Ben Fernandez shot a 4-over par 214, placing him tied for 53rd.
Redshirt freshman Brian Choe and true freshman Will Hopkins each carded a 16-over par 226 over the three days to tie for 75th.
"As a team, we just made way too many big numbers this week," Robbins said. "This is a good team and I know we are better than the results we are getting right now. The mistakes we are making are correctable. We have a long season ahead and all of our goals are still in front of us. We just need to stay positive and keep working to get better everyday."
Georgia Tech won the tournament after coming into Sunday tied for second. The Yellow Jackets shot an impressive 28-under par 812 as a team. Bryson Nimmer of Clemson won the individual title with a 15-under par 195.
K-State returns to action October 12-14 for the Big 12 Match Play Championship in Houston, Texas.
