Early Goal Sinks K-State on Sunday
Sep 23, 2018 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Shortly after the opening whistle for Sunday's match between Kansas State and Oklahoma at the K-State Soccer Complex, the Sooners registered the only goal of the match to capture the 1-0 win. The Wildcats have lost four consecutive home matches for just the second time in program history.
Oklahoma (5-5-1, 1-1-0 Big 12) got off to a fast start, converting on its first shot of the afternoon just 46 seconds into the match. A cross from Oklahoma's Kaylee Dao from the right side of the K-State penalty area was deflected by K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy. Ericka Yost pounced on the rebound and converted into the open net.
K-State (4-5-2, 0-2-0) would put all five of their first half shots on goal, but were unable to even the match, as Oklahoma's McKinley Crone made all five saves. The Sooners registered six total shots with three on goal.
In the second half, K-State continued to pepper the Oklahoma net but were unable to break through to even the match. The Wildcats had a glimpse of tying the match in the 80th minute.
Sophomore Maddie Souder was played in with a long pass. She gathered the ball and fired from 15 yards on the right side of the goal but her attempt went just high of the upper left corner of the goal.
The Wildcats finished the afternoon with a 12-10 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 lead in shots on goal. K-State also pocketed a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Kansas State will look to snap a seven-match skid in Big 12 action, as the Wildcats will make their first first trip to Morgantown, West Virginia, on Friday, September 28, to face West Virginia at 6 p.m. (CT). The match will be available online at MountaineerTV. An audio broadcast will be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On the team's energy level and settling into the game...
"We switched it on mentally with a lot more urgency, we created so many chances. We played a really good game, we were just unlucky trying to find the back of the net. We responded really, really well especially in the second half. We just had bad fortune this weekend in terms of those 5 minute periods in both games where we just fell asleep for a little bit and they punished us for it. But, overall I felt like we responded well today, especially in the second half."
On regrouping after this weekend's games to play West Virginia on the road...
"It's going to be a challenge. You just got to keep training the mentality side, keep working on preparation of how we can do what we need to do to give ourselves the best chance both offensively and defensively. We'll just keep getting them prepared and hopefully we can finally figure out how to win a big game and once we do that's the next level for our team is figuring out how to win those big games, because we're definitely competing at that level."
