K-State Downed at Cal State Fullerton, 2-0

Sep 08, 2019 | Soccer

FULLERTON, California – Kansas State looked to end its trip to Southern California on a high note on Sunday evening at Titan Stadium, but Cal State Fullerton defended its home pitch with a 2-0 win.

"I felt like the defense executed the plan," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "They did a good job defending and locking down areas and looking for those opportunities to counter. Unfortunately the ball didn't bounce our way tonight and now we just need to regroup."

Cal State Fullerton (4-2-0) registered an 8-3 advantage in total shots in the first half, but the squads were scoreless after the first 45 minutes.

Kansas State (1-3-2) nearly broke through in the 14th minute. Junior Brookelynn Entz fired a shot from the right of the goal that was saved by the Fullerton goalkeeper Noa Schumacher.

After Schumacher's kick after the save, K-State sophomore Emily Crain quickly played the ball over the top of the Cal State Fullerton defense. Senior Katie Cramer raced to the ball and fired a shot. Schumacher had come way off her line to make the save at the top of the 18-yard box. Schumacher stopped the shot but it hit her square in the face. Play was briefly halted to tend to Schumacher, who would remain in the match.

In the 75th minute, Cal State Fullerton broke through the K-State defense for the first tally of the evening. The Titans' Kaya Hawkinson took a corner kick from the left of the K-State net. Cal State Fullerton's Maddie Bennett deflected the driven corner kick to the far post with the ball crawling past the goal line.

The Titans produced an insurance goal in the 84th minute. K-State misplayed a clearance of a cross and Cal State Fullerton's Emelia Owen finished her attempt from eight yards out into the left side of the net.

Cal State Fullerton held a 19-6 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. K-State held a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.

Overall, Dibbini was pleased with how his team competed during the two-match swing through Southern California.

"It is great preparation going into the Big 12 playing two teams that are quality and it puts us under a little bit of pressure and having to play through. I thought we did a nice job all weekend. It was unfortunate in the second game. We got a tough break on their first goal. It is tough when you are playing that well and you get a tough break. Hopefully, we can learn from this and move on.

Kansas State returns to Buser Family Park on Thursday to begin a five-match home stand. The Wildcats will host Gonzaga on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Tulsa on Sunday at 1 p.m. Thursday night's match is Area 51 Night, as the first 100 K-State students will receive a K-State Soccer LED Alien Headband.

Sunday afternoon's match is Junior Wildcats Club Day on National Batman Day. The exclusive pregame event for Junior Wildcat Club members will include concession discounts, the opportunity to participate in pregame activities and get autographs from Willie Wildcat. The first 100 kids 12 and under will receive a Powercat Batman mask.
