K-State Routs Oklahoma in First Big 12 Home Shutout

Oct 16, 2020 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State soccer scored a goal in the third minute and never looked back as the Wildcats ended an eight-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Oklahoma on Friday night at Buser Family Park. The win was the third league win in program history and the first home Big 12 shutout in its five-year history.

"We are finally figuring out how to play together," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "We are figuring out our rotations defensively. And offensively, they just bought in this week. We returned to just loving the game this week, playing loose and having that mentality all week. This was a great week of practice. It's just a great feeling right now.""

K-State (1-4-0) jumped in front in the third minute. The Wildcats earned a corner kick as Maddie Weichel drove the ball hard to the end line. Silke Bonnen then attempted the corner and her service found the head of sophomore defender Shae Turner at the left near post from two yards out.

"I mean it was a play we have worked on a lot in practice, practice makes perfect," said Turner about her first career goal. "We started on the goal line, came right off the line and Silke played a great ball, and it just hit my head and I directed it the right way into the back of the net."

The goal was the first of Turner's career, while the assist was the second of Bonnen's career. Turner is the 12th player in program history to be credited with a game-winning goal and the second defender to achieve the milestone, joining Haley Sutter on August 24, 2017, at Oral Roberts.

Oklahoma (0-3-1) was stymied in their attempt to square the match in the seventh minute. After a free kick bounced to within five yards, Reagan Glisson toed an attempt towards the frame. K-State freshman goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer reacted quickly to make the save, her only save of the first half.

"I mean I stayed on my ball line and got as big as possible and I hoped at that point that it was going to hit me, and it did," said Werremeyer about her crucial first half save.

The Wildcats increased their lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute. Weichel crossed a ball from near midfield and found sophomore forward Kyler Goins on the other end. Oklahoma goalkeeper Nikki Panas came off her line to stop Goins, but Goins sent a low shot between Panas's legs and into the open net. The goal was the first of Goins's collegiate career and the assist by Weichel was the first of her career.

The two first half goals by the Wildcats were the most goals K-State has scored in an opening half in a Big 12 match in program history. Turner and Goins were the first K-State sophomores to score a goal in a match for K-State since Brookelynn Entz at Tulsa on September 16, 2018.

In the 65th minute, Entz was able to secure a free kick for the Wildcats from just outside the 18-yard box by drawing an Oklahoma foul. Bonnen stepped forward to make the initial attack. Her line drive shot attempt caromed off the hand of Oklahoma's Sakura Yoshida inside the box, resulting in a K-State penalty kick.

Entz would take the penalty kick and left no doubt with a powerful strike into the net for the 3-0 lead with 25 minutes to play. The product of Newton, Kansas, has now made three straight penalty kicks and holds the school record for penalty kick goals with four.

"I think that is something our team has never had to do before," Entz said when asked about adding the insurance goal. "We don't know how to finish games, and we did that tonight. We talked about it in the locker room at halftime that 2-0 is the most dangerous lead in soccer and we wanted to come out and get the next goal and we did.""

With her goal, Entz improved her school record for career goals to 12. She is the first player in program history to score two or more goals in four straight seasons.

Werremeyer would secure her first win and shutout with three saves in the second half, while facing eight total shots. The native of Blue Springs, Missouri, is the first freshman goalkeeper in program history to earn a win and to secure a shutout.

Friday's match was K-State's 21st shutout in program history. This was the second Big 12 shutout in program history and the first since downing Kansas in Lawrence on October 6, 2017.

Werremeyer was quick to credit the defenders in front of her for the 90 minutes of effort.

"They were amazing, they made my job so easy tonight. I was so proud of the girls in front of me. They worked their butts off today."

The three goals were the most by K-State in a Big 12 match and the sixth time K-State has scored three or more in a match. The eight total points by K-State were the most the Wildcats have accumulated in a Big 12 match in program history, besting the previous record of five which was achieved three times including twice at Oklahoma.

Oklahoma would hold an 11-6 edge in total shots, but each team would notch four shots on goal. The Sooners held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

K-State will play a pair of matches next weekend. The Wildcats return to the state of Texas to face Baylor on Thursday, October 22, at 7 p.m. K-State then will host (6) TCU on Sunday, October 25, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.

What They Said

Mike Dibbini, K-State Head Coach

On getting up early with a goal…
"We finally put a good match together, we finally had our depth today as you can see. Those players came off the bench and gave our starters the rest they needed. We actually converted on our chances today, they actually took a goal away from us that I thought was a brilliant play. It just feels good, it's been the hardest week of my coaching career coming off that devastating loss on the road." Just  proud of them, can't ask for a better result today.

On finally converting on opportunities…
"We are finally figuring out how to play together, we are figuring out our rotations defensively. And offensively they just bought in this week. We returned to just loving the game this week, playing loose and having that mentality all week. This was a great week of practice, it's just a great feeling right now."

On the feeling after Turner scored the first goal…
"To be truthful, we were kind of in a shock, because we had never been in that position before. Then going into halftime being in this position before, can we keep this going and then we got that next goal. It's indescribable right now. We are a new program, young I understand all that, but this is a big win for us. Hopefully we can continue to move forward in the right direction."

On Alaina's growth throughout the season…
"I think her anxiety levels  aren't as high and she's being more of a leader in the back, she was very vocal tonight, and she managed the game for us really well."

On Entz's final goal…
"I mean Brooklyn does a lot for us, she's our backbone, our leader, our quarterback, offensively especially. So for her to take her time and basically kill the game with that goal was amazing. Her penalty kick was pure composure and world class for her.

Brookelynn Entz, Senior Midfielder

On the dominating win…
"Feels amazing, especially after our last game at Texas. We had a good week of practice, really just trying to enjoy the game again, and i think it showed out there. I think that's what this team needs ,this team just needs to have fun. Play real soccer, put some balls on the ground, score some goals and just have fun."

On the confidence gained from the game tonight…
"Sure, I mean it's not just a 1-0 win, we dominated out there, and won 3-0 the score showed it. And I think we gained a lot of confidence."

On being able to score that 3rd goal…
"I think that is something our team has never had to do before. We don't know how to finish games, and we did that tonight. We talked about in the locker room at halftime that 2-0 is the most dangerous lead in soccer and we wanted to come out and get the next goal and we did."

On her celebration after her PK…
"I mean I'm supposed to make those, I didn't really feel like I needed to celebrate or anything."

Shae Turner, Sophomore Defender

On her first goal…
"I mean it was a play we have worked on a lot in practice, practice makes perfect. We started on the goal line, came right off the line and Silke played a great ball, and it just hit my head and I directed it the right way into the back of the net."

On getting the team rolling with a goal…
"I don't really count it as myself, it is a team effort every time. Silke like I said, played a phenomenal ball, honestly I was just in the right place at the right time, and just finished."

On the importance of the win…
"So important, as you know it's been a hump and hard to believe but this means everything to us. Yeah it's hard coming in with no non-conference games, and having to come straight into Big 12 play. But honestly we 've just been playing soccer to have fun lately. We've been pretty tight,m but this last week we were like what do we have to lose, let's just love soccer again, and obviously you could tell that's how we played today."

On the importance of the 3rd goal…
"So important, that was the halftime talk. The next goal has to be ours, we cannot give up the next goal. Because that has really been our achilles heel the first 5 minutes of halves. Obviously I knew when we got the PK, Brookelynn is a stud and was going to nail that for us"

Kyler Goins, Sophomore Forward

On getting their first win…
"It feels so good, and obviously  we have not been getting the outcome we wanted. So we were hoping and praying that we would get the outcome today. We worked hard in practice, it feels great and amazing."

On the teams resolve to get the win…
"Being a family,  having confidence in one another, and even though we weren't getting the outcome we wanted I think it showed tonight ."

On the chemistry of the attackers and her goal tonight…
"Well, the defense was spreading out a little bit, so those through balls were on all day. We talked about it at halftime , even after my goal I got a couple more and didn't finish those. No it was big  the chemistry really showed and we do it in practice,  we haven't been showing it in games but we showed it tonight."

On how important it was to score her first goal...
"Very important, obviously I didn't get the second goal because the ball was out. And I was nervous I wasn't going to get another chance. That was going to be my first goal and I was so lit and I was so happy and I was thinking that was the only one I was going to get. Then I came back and get it again. It's big for me because I came from Arkansas and I wasn't playing at all. And now I'm starting and I got my first goal tonight."

Alaina Werremeyer, Freshman Goalkeeper

On the defense tonight…
"They were amazing, they made my job so easy tonight, I was so proud of the girls in front of me, they worked their butts off today."

On her effort put in tonight…
"I mean the same amount as always, You train it all week for those one or two moments in the game and we are always ready for it. Like I said my girls made it really easy for me tonight so I didn't have to do a lot."

On getting early goals…
"You always have to be ready, it only takes a moment and you see it in every game, it only takes one play to change the rhythm of the game. So you stay pretty turned on, but scoring early definitely helps everyone get into a rhythm."

On her celebration after the second goal…
"I definitely wanted to be with my girls, but I am not doing that again, I chose Goalkeeper for a reason. I love being with the girls, and the excitement is palpable and I just had to be with them and had to get a hug."

On her save early in the game…
"I mean i stayed on my ball line and got as big as possible and I hoped at that point that it was going to hit me. And it did."
