K-State Drops Double-Overtime Heartbreaker at Oklahoma

Apr 17, 2021 | Soccer

NORMAN, Oklahoma – For the third straight road match this spring, K-State soccer needed overtime to decide a match. Oklahoma used a late game-winner to down the Wildcats in the 2020 finale for both teams on Saturday at John Crain Field.

"I think they were just a little bit more aggressive in the first half and it was just a motivation thing," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about a first half in which K-State was outshot, 9-1. "They were a lot more motivated and a lot more aggressive than we were in the first half, but once the game settled down we were much better in the second half. We started chipping away and had some opportunities but they were definitely a lot more motivated and aggressive that first half.""

K-State (3-9-2) registered a pair of shots in the first overtime. Maddie Weichel tallied a dangerous shot on goal in the 95th minute, but Oklahoma goalkeeper Leah Radow made the save. In the dying moments of the first overtime, Kyler Goins fired a shot on a pass from Weichel but the attempt just went over the crossbar.

Oklahoma (1-12-2) had the wind at their backs in the second overtime and converted the winner in the 108th minute. Bri Amos was played into the K-State zone with a long ball. Her cross found Megan Reilly open on the right post from 15 yds. Reilly sent a pass back to Cailey England who fired from four yards to secure the win.

The Sooners ended the match with a 20-6 advantage in total shots, including an 8-3 lead in shots on goal. Oklahoma also tallied an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.

K-State freshman goalkeeper Peyton Pearson returned to her home state for the first time as a collegiate athlete and recorded seven saves. This was the third time this season Pearson made five or more saves in a match. In four matches played in the 2020 season, Pearson made 23 saves with a pair of shutouts.

After Pearson's four career start, Dibbini is pleased with the depth of the K-State goalkeeper position is heading into the 2021 season.

"Peyton had solid performances across the board this season when you can pick up that many saves and keep us in matches and be consistent doing it. Like I've said, it's great that we have some depth in that position. We're looking for them to continue to grow and figure out ways to challenge each other and get better."

Kansas State ends its fifth season of action with a 3-9-2 overall record. During the fall, the Wildcats recorded a 3-6-0 mark in Big 12 action. K-State finished a program-high seventh-place in the Big 12 standings.

Dibbini is excited for what the program brings back for the 2021 season and the depth the roster will have.

"I think, going into next season, we're heading in the right direction in terms of having a lot more depth for the players to really not take a day off. The roster and the depth of the roster is going to allow us to get more every single day out of the players as we continue to grow this program. So, basically, day in and day out, if somebody is not performing somebody else can step in and fill those shoes right away. We won't to lose much of whatever we're looking for in whatever position that might be."

The Wildcats will welcome back 2020 MAC Hermann Trophy candidate and 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection Brookelynn Entz. Entz, the team's leading scorer in 2020, will also be joined by Weichel, Goins, Shae Turner and Bailey Nemechek. The Wildcats will also add in 10 new faces for the 2021 season.

The fall 2021 schedule will be announced early in the summer.
