Shankar's high jump win among 15 on the day for the Wildcats

NORMAN, Okla. – Senior Tejaswin Shankar's season-best height in the men's high jump highlighted an overall strong performance by the Kansas State's track and field teams, as the Wildcats collected 15 event titles at Oklahoma's John Jacobs Invitational on Saturday (April 24) at the John Jacobs Track Complex.

The New Delhi, India native registered his best mark in the high jump since posting a height of 2.27m/7-05.25 to earn a runner-up finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships, as he sailed over the bar at 2.25m/7-04.50 on Saturday to win the event title. Shankar missed on all three attempts at would have been both an NCAA-best and a career-best height of 2.28m/7-05.75. Shankar's mark of 2.25m/7-04.50 would tie for the third-best in the NCAA heading into today's action, as South Dakota's Zack Anderson (April 9) and Tennessee's Darryl Sullivan (April 8) had tallied heights of 2.26m/7-05 earlier this month.

Shankar's performance was among a number of impressive efforts on Saturday by the Wildcats, who among their 15 event titles swept the men's and women's 800 meters, 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles, discus and javelin events. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore O'shalia Johnson, sophomore Shalysa Wray, senior Lauren Taubert and senior Kimisha Chambers won the event by more than 8 seconds with a time of 3:32.91, which is the third-best time in the event in school history and best since 2016.

In all, the Wildcats posted 16 personal bests in 14 events.

"Weather and winds were a little iffy at the start, but the day ended up being very nice," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Ashley (Petr) had a big discus throw and Cam had a nice double (first in the discus and second in the shot put). Logan (Wolfley) had another PR (in the javelin). TJ (Shankar) looked good (in the high jump) and the women's relay ran very well. All in all, a productive day."

Among the 15 event titles were impressive men's and women's sweeps of the 800 meters (Travis Hodge and Alex Ferguson), 100-meter hurdles (Donovan Turner) and 110-meter hurdles (Vitoria Alves), discus (Cameron Lewis and Ashley Petr) and javelin (Logan Wolfley and Briana Lowe).

Senior Wurrie Njadoe continued her solid outdoor season with a first-place finish in the women's 100 meters with a personal-best time of 11.46. It is the second-fastest time in school history and the best since A'Keyla Mitchell set the school record with a time of 11.40 at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge in 2015.

Wolfley and Lowe in the men's and women javelin as well as senior Taishia Pryce in the women's long jump gave K-State titles in the first three event of the day. Wolfley fired off a personal-best throw on his second attempt in the javelin, posting a mark of 71.08m/233-02 to continue his second-best mark in school history. Only Craig Smith (72.45m/237-08) in 2002 has a better mark in the event. Lowe and sophomore teammate Urte Bacianskaite went first and third in the women's javelin, registering tosses of 42.78m/140-04 and 37.51m/123-0, respectively.

Pryce was one of four Wildcats to compete in the long jump, as she earned the winning mark of 6.12m/20-01.00 on her fifth attempt. She was followed by Alves (5.79m/19-00, 4th), freshman Rhianna Phipps (5.66m/18-07.00, 6th) and Bacianskaite (5.47m/17-11.50, 8th).

Lewis nearly made it four titles in four events for K-State, as the senior finished second in the men's shot put with personal-best mark of 18.25m/59-10.5, which is the seventh-best mark in school history. He returned later in the day to win the discus, posting the winning throw of 55.16m/180-11 on his first attempt.

Fellow senior Ashley Petr gave the team a sweep in the discus with a personal-best mark of 58.07m/190-06 on her fourth attempt. She also finished third in the hammer throw with a toss of 55.27m/181-04.

Although she didn't pick up an event title on the day, junior Taylor Latimer was another impressive Wildcat thrower on the day. She was the runner-up in the women's hammer with a toss of 56.02m/183-09, while she placed third in the shot put with a mark of 16.15m/53-00.

The Wildcats captured seven titles in running events, including a sweep of the 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles and the 800 meters, which began with sophomore Sydney Burton's win in the women's 1,500 meters. Burton was one of three runners to finish in the top-4 in the event, posting a winning and personal-best time of 4:34.92. She was followed by fellow sophomores Delaney Kemp (4:43.84) and Cailan Steward (4:47.95), who finished in second and fourth places, respectively. Burton would finish in sixth-place in the 800 meters later in the day.

Senior Justin Davis followed Burton with a win in the men's 400 meters with a time of 46.95.

Alves was among two runners to finish in the top-3 in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a winning time of 13.22, while senior Lauren Taubert was third with a time of 13.72. Sophomore Donovan Turner led a 1-2 finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.29, while fellow sophomore Kyle Parr was second with a personal-best time of 15.24.

Ferguson started the sweep in the 800 meters with a winning time of 2:10.87 in the women's race. She was among four Wildcats in the top-6, including third-place Delaney Kemp (2:15.27), fourth-place Jessica Caraway (2:17.25) and sixth-place Sydney Burton (2:19.73). On the men's side, Hodge won the event with a time of 1:51.06 and he was followed by three runners (Mike Rohlinger, Kyle Johnston and Dylan Brenneman) in the top-7.

The last title came in the men's pole vault, where sophomore Jesse Pinkley won the event with a personal-best height of 4.90m/16-00.75. Fellow sophomore Chandler Heid finished second with a mark of 4.55m/14-11.

The Wildcats will return to action next weekend with a trip to College Station, Texas on Saturday, May 1 for the Texas A&M Alumni Muster at the E.B. Cushing Stadium.
