Weichel Scores Pair to Lift Wildcats to Win

Sep 05, 2021 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Junior Marisa Weichel recorded her first career multi-goal game, which elevated K-State to its fourth win in the last five matches as K-State downed Colorado State, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field. With the win on Sunday, K-State has registered at least one win in the first three weeks for the first time and secured a winning record in the current five-match road trip.

"I think we came out with more urgency and more determination to get on the front foot right away and get off to a great start," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about Sunday's performance.

K-State (4-2-0) came out of the gates determined to take an early lead, which resulted in an 11th minute goal by Weichel. Weichel bodied through two Colorado State defenders roughly 35 yards from goal. She won possession near the top of the 18-yard box and after one dribble scored in the lower left corner of the frame.

"We all just really wanted that win today and Brookelynn (Entz) played a great ball and I knew that could be a chance for us to get ahead early in the game," said Weichel about her first goal. "I was determined to get it done and our team was working so hard. We needed that one today so I had to get it done in the moment."

Weichel bookended the scoring for the Wildcats on Sunday, as she scored an insurance tally in the 60th minute to give K-State its 4-0 lead.

Freshman Kenzi Gillispie played a long pass over the top of the Colorado State (0-2-2) defense. Weichel was on the other end, taking a couple dribbles into space before finishing 16 yards away in the lower right corner. Weichel knew she had a chance as soon as Gillispie played the ball to her.

"I saw I was even with the backline and when I saw Kenzi's ball getting played, it was kind of like the first the ball Brookelynn played to me where I was like, 'Okay game on.' I knew once I had the ball that it might be just me and the goalie and it was and I finished."

This was Weichel's team-leading third and fourth goals of the season. Weichel is the third Wildcat to register two or more goals in a match and the first since Brookelynn Entz at Missouri on March 28, 2021. Weichel has scored a goal in all three weeks of the season. Her goal total this season ranks tied for third for a single-season in program history.

Dibbini knew the forward from Papillion, Nebraska, had the potential for a solid performance this afternoon.

"She really created those chances with her athletic ability when she didn't have possession. She's long and athletic. She's a nuisance for defenders which she showed today. If she could do that for us the rest of the season and can come out and play really, really well for us from the get go, it gives our team some confidence going forward."

Weichel owns two game-winning goals this season and is the second player in school history to score two game-winners in the same season, joining Hannah Davis in the 2017 season. Weichel is tied for second in school history for career game-winning goals.

In between the two Weichel goals, a pair of Wildcats scored their first career goals. K-State made the score 2-0 in the 37th minute. On its third corner kick of the afternoon, freshman Katy Coffin found the head of redshirt sophomore Caylee Thornhill eight yards from goal at the left near post. Thornhill redirected the orb into the upper right corner.

Dibbini was pleased to see K-State's second goal this season off a corner kick.

"A lot of things go into the set piece goals and we have players in the box that are able to get their head on the ball and not only win the first and second ball but today just shows how dangerous they can be in finishing real chances. When they work on our set pieces, the right way, good things can happen and it was a really nice service by Katy Coffin and a really nice finish from (Caylee) Thornhill."

This was Thornhill's first career goal and the first career assist for Coffin, who was playing in her home state of Colorado (Grand Junction).

Just before halftime, the forward tandem of Roo Yarnell-Williams and Riley Baker collaborated on the third goal. Yarnell-Williams won the ball just past midfield on the attacking side. She played the ball ahead to Baker. Baker then held off a Rams defender and finished in the lower right corner for her first career goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Peyton Pearson tallied her third start in frame and pocketed her third shutout of the season. Pearson owns a personal shutout streak of 270:00 consecutive minutes this season. On Sunday, Pearson made a personal season-high four saves.

K-State held a 15-10 edge in total shots, including an 8-4 lead in shots on goal. The Rams held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

K-State will conclude its five-match road trip on Thursday evening, as the Wildcats travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, to face Purdue. Kick-off on Thursday is set for 6 p.m. (CDT). Thursday's match will be streamed online on Big Ten Network Plus.
