4x800-Meter Relay Squad Sets School Record on Second Day of Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Kansas State track and field split Friday (April 29) with part of the team competing at the Drake Relays, three individuals at the Kip Janvrin Open and the remainder at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout.
"I thought the team competed very well," stated assistant coach Ryun Godfrey. "I can always count on a great effort from this group."
Drake Relays
Highlighting the day for the Wildcats was the women's 4x800 relay crew. Placing third overall in the event was senior Alex Ferguson, fifth year senior Macy Heinz and juniors Sydney Burton and Kassidy Johnson. The squad recorded a time of 8:31.22, a new school record.
"The women's 4x800-meter ran very well," said Godfrey. "Kassidy Johnson split 2:03.4. Men ran well also. It was a very strong field."
The men's 4x800 team, comprised of fifth year senior Travis Hodge, sophomore Will Carroll and juniors Kyle Johnston and Hadley Splechter, came in fifth place with a time of 7:26.21.
Competing in the men's 4x1600 for the first time this season was fifth year senior Noah Stevenson, Splechter, sophomore Jack Vincent and senior Stephen Kielhofner. The crew finished eighth overall with a time of 16:52.71.
Throwing to a mark of 38.36m/125-10 on her first attempt in the women's javelin throw and placing 15th was junior Briana Lowe.
Coming in 16th in the women's shot put was sophomore Jasmine Greer with a heave of 14.60m/47-10.75 on her third attempt.
Kip Janvrin Open
Three Wildcats traveled to Indianola, Iowa for the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College.
Running a personal best of 17:38.62 in the women's 5,000-meter run was junior Cailan Steward. The Andover, Kansas native finished second out of 28 competitors.
Sophomore Jessica Caraway competed in the women's 800-meter run and completed the race in 2:18.26. Caraway placed tenth in her heat and overall.
In the men's 800-meter run, sophomore Ryan Derry came in 17th and ran a time of 1:54.91, just .07 seconds off his personal best.
Corky/Crofoot Shootout
Representing K-State at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout at Texas Tech were freshman Emil Uhlin and fifth year senior Tejaswin Shankar in the men's discus throw.
Uhlin recorded a throw of 38.73m/127-0 and placed seventh overall while Shankar came in ninth with a mark of 34.58m/113-5.
Competition will continue Saturday (April 30) in Lubbock, Texas for the Corky/Crofoot Shootout and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. In Texas, the men's javelin throw will begin at 3 p.m. while the women's distance medley relay starts at 12:10 p.m. in Iowa.
