K-State Felled By Pair of First Half Goals

Oct 01, 2023 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – With strong winds directly out of the south on Sunday afternoon at Buser Family Park, K-State was unable to take the advantage in the second half and square the match as Baylor held off the Wildcats for a 2-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (2-8-3, 0-4-1 Big 12) outshot the Bears in the second half, 19-3, which included five shots on goal.
- For the afternoon, K-State outshot Baylor, 23-13. The 23 shot attempts set the school record for total shots in a Big 12 match. K-State's seven shots on goal tied for the fourth-most in a Big 12 match.
- Trailing 2-0, the Wildcats looked to pull within one by the end of the first half on a heady play by a freshman.
- Freshman Jo Sees took the ball away from a Baylor defender in the Bears' 18-yard box. Sees drew the attention of goalkeeper Ashlee Zirkel and dished to wide open senior Kiran Singh at the top of the six-yard box. With Zirkel out of her frame, Singh looked at an open goal mouth. Just as Singh attempted her shot, a Baylor defender dashed to the line and deflected the ball with her chest to prevent the goal.
- In the opening half, Baylor (6-5-2, 1-3-1) scored in the seventh minute on an attempt from Hannah Augustyn. From the top of the 18-yard box, Augustyn scored into the upper left corner.
- In the 36th minute, the Bears made the score 2-0 with a tally by Theresa McCullough into the lower right corner.
- Among K-State's flurry of shot attempts in the second half, the Wildcats looked to have narrowed the gap to one in the 61st minute but another team save kept K-State off the board.
- On a K-State corner kick midway through the half, the Wildcats pieced together three straight shots from the doorstep. A deflection by Baylor on a Reece Walrod attempt resulted in another K-State shot from close range by Jazmin Brown. Her shot was stopped on the line by a Baylor defender and a rebound attempt from Sophie Simmons was saved by Zirkel.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On his thoughts on the game …
"It was a story of two halves. Felt like we were a lot more brave, a lot more dangerous in the second half. We took our chances, gambled a lot more, and created a lot more chances for us as you can see the shots on goal, 19-3 in the second half, we just waited too late to get going. We dug ourselves a hole in the first half and at this level you can't dig yourself a hole and that's what happened."

On Baylor today…
"I felt like we shot ourselves in the foot in the first half with the mistakes, those couple mistakes that cost us. They had a really good time on possession on the ball. But we were on our heels instead of playing hard in the first half. We weren't disrupting them to get that rhythm, so I give them credit for that."

On goal opportunities…
"We need to continue to develop and work on our execution for a goal. We can't say we didn't have chances to put some away. They put those away and we just got to do their job but the message is to come out and put some away."

On the weather conditions and its affect in the game …
"Yeah, I mean, having the wind to our back in the second half definitely helped. Definitely helped them, like I said they capitalized on their chances and we didn't, we just got to learn and move forward."

On staying positive going into Thursday…
"Just continue to develop, continue to be positive, and look at the bright spots of this game and the golden opportunities in the second half. We ended the game not with the result we wanted, but with a lot of confidence going forward. Thinking about what we can build off that and go on to the next game."
