Two Second Half Goals Stun K-State on Sunday Night

Sep 10, 2023 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State held a one-goal halftime lead on Sunday night at Buser Family Park, but it wasn't enough as Oral Roberts used the wind at their backs to push in a pair of second half goals to send K-State to its fourth straight defeat, 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (2-4-2) opened the match firing from all angles. Senior Maddie Weichel was the first to find the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
- Senior Kiran Singh played a ball ahead to junior Riley Baker near midfield. Baker kept the assembly line moving, sending a ball to the left side of the field. Weichel ran onto the pass and slotted a low shot from the top of the 18-yard box toward the right post and past the fingers of Oral Roberts goalkeeper Alexa Riefer.
- This was Weichel's second career goal and her first since scoring against Texas Tech on November 13, 2020.
- K-State outshot Oral Roberts (2-3-3) in the opening half, 14-4, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
- In the second half, the Golden Eagles used a strong wind to keep the offensive pressure on by outshooting the Wildcats, 15-10.
- In the 64th minute, a handball was called on K-State in the 18-yard box. Samantha See of Oral Roberts finished from the spot to square the match.
- In the 72nd minute, a corner kick from Kylee Munson of Oral Roberts found the foot of Julia Thasaphong. Thasaphong redirected the service at the near left post to give the Golden Eagles the 2-1 lead.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On his thoughts on the game …
"Disappointing result, it felt like we had enough opportunity to separate this game away and we kept the them in the match. And you know a team that's feeding off of some good energy. When you keep a team like that in the match it becomes more difficult and challenging. They built some confidence and once they scored the equalizer, they got more confidence and a young team like ours didn't know how to respond to it."

On getting a goal to end the shutout streak…
"I mean, it's always good, wish we capitalized and executed more of our chances. We did have some of those, but you got to be better. We have to be better putting those away."

On the change in momentum during the second half…
"They pressed us, they started the press late in the first half, and I knew they were going to do it in the second half. And we had a plan, but we just didn't respond to it. And they definitely punished us for it."

On the weather and change of field position…
"Obviously we can't control Mother Nature. The wind picked up a little bit. The rain came a little bit. It definitely deflated us a little bit. We had to adjust. At the end of the day, we had our chances to separate the game early on. We just didn't do it."

On subbing in Morgan Hobbs
"We needed to get her some solid minutes before we go into Big 12 play. That was our plan even before the game started. There was nothing that was going to allow us not to do it. That was intentionally our plan before the game started was to get to Morgan some minutes before we go into Big 12 play in case Murphy goes down. So whether we were up or down, that was the plan from the beginning."
