Wildcats Come Up Short Against Cowgirls

Sep 24, 2023 | Soccer

STILLWATER, Oklahoma – K-State looked for a road point at top-50 RPI Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon at Neal Patterson Stadium. The homestanding Cowgirls used a pair of goals late in each half to capture a 2-0 win.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On the match as a whole...
"The first question we asked the group was, 'can we walk away satisfied with our effort today? It was 100% by the group in the locker room. We had a strong performance but the result didn't go our way. We competed hard. We did everything and tried to execute our chances. We just got beat by a better team today. We can't keep our heads down. We have to stay focused and regroup. I thought overall, it was a better performance than Thursday. We just didn't get the result that we needed today."

On if the counter-attack was better today than Thursday...
"Absolutely. I felt like we had our chances. There was a lot of great moments of execution. We just couldn't get that last strike on the ball. We just had a better performance all-around and it started with our energy, our effort, our intensity and our focus. We gave up maybe three or four key moments in a game where we just weren't as focused as we needed to be in those moments. It wasn't as many as the night before. We just played better overall."

On seeing Jazmin Brown as a defensive midfielder more this season...
"There's a strong possibility. We liked what we saw from Jazmin. (Xcaret) Pineda for them is a dangerous player and creates havoc. She does a lot for them. We wanted to put Jazmin closer to her to make sure she didn't get going. I felt she did a really good job. Pineda got loose there for just a quick moment. That's where they scored their first goal. They punish teams if you give them a little bit of a split second, but I thought overall it was a good game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (2-6-3, 0-2-1 Big 12) threatened in the 37th minute after a weather delay in the 30th minute. Freshman Rilyn Rintoul was fed a ball from sophomore Sophie Harlan. Rintoul sent a rocket towards the top right corner, but Oklahoma State goalkeeper Grace Gordon narrowly pushed the shot over the crossbar for a K-State corner kick.
- Oklahoma State (10-2-0, 3-0-0) entered Sunday's match ranked 49th in the nation in the first NCAA RPI of the season. The Cowgirls would go in front in the 40th minute. Xcaret Pineda carried possession from near midfield to the top of the 18-yard box before firing her shot. The ball struck the base of the right post, caromed to the left and went in, giving the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.
- To begin the second half, sophomore Andra Mohler uncorked a strong shot from the top of the Oklahoma State 18-yard box, but the attempt was cradled by Gordon.
- The Cowgirls added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. A volley at the top of the K-State 18-yard box found the foot of Logan Heausler. She attempted a right-footed shot and found the upper right corner.
- Oklahoma State outshot K-State, 21-9, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
