Ingram Homers Twice, Longhorns Even Series Friday
Mar 30, 2024 | Baseball
K-State (18-7, 6-2 Big 12) erased a five-run deficit and tied the game 8-8 going into seventh. Texas (16-11, 5-3 Big 12) scored three in the top of the inning before the Wildcats tied the game back up, 11-11, but the Longhorns would score 10 in the final two innings to put the game away.
"Tonight was disappointing after the way we played last night," head coach Pete Hughes said. "We didn't pitch great and played sloppy. You can't have four errors. You're not going to beat anybody. I'm proud of the way our guys battled. They always battle back but I mean sometimes you have to throw up a couple of zeros and sustain a lead. We weren't able to do that. We'll regroup and try to win a series at home tomorrow."
Offensively, Texas hammered out 21 runs on 22 hits led by catcher Rylan Galvan. The sophomore went 5-for-6 at the plate and drove in a game-high five RBI and scored three runs.
Gage Boehm (2-2) picked up the victory in relief, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings late in the game. Jackson Wentworth suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits in his two innings of work (1-1).
Three different Wildcats homered led by two from Ingram, who finished the night 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Danniel Rivera and Raphael Pelletier also turned in three-hit days, with Rivera driving in three runs.
THE RUNDOWN
K-State jumped on the board with solo home runs by Ingram and Pelletier in the first and second.
Texas used three two-run home runs to grab an 8-3 lead leading into the bottom of the sixth.
Kaelen Culpepper hit his second home run of the series to lead off the Wildcats first rally of the night. With one out, Kyan Lodice tripled into left center before scoring on a fielder's choice to second. Pelletier singled to move Rivera to third before the senior scored sacrifice fly from David Bishop.
Trailing 8-6, Ingram belted his seventh homer of the season 422-feet to left center to even the score.
The Longhorns took advantage of a throwing error and two-run single to retake the lead, 11-8, in the seventh.
Brady Day and Culpepper each singled in the bottom of the inning before Lodice walked to load the bases. Rivera laced his third hit through the left side to score Day and Culpepper and bring the game within one. The Wildcats loaded the bases with a single from Pelletier until Bishop walked on four straight pitches to score the tying run.
Tied 11-11, Texas scored three runs in the eighth to regain the lead before creating separation with a seven-run ninth inning.
