Don Trentham enters his third season on the sidelines for K-State, serving the program as the associate head coach/recruiting coordinator. Trentham joined Dibbini's staff in the summer of 2021.
Trentham’s on-field coaching duties include working with K-State’s defense.
In addition to his coaching duties, Trentham’s responsibilities include: practice preparation and development for the team’s defense, organization and arrangement of the team’s game schedule, recruiting coordination of unofficial and official visits and recruiting evaluation.
During his second season in Manhattan in 2022, K-State allowed 238 total shots which were the fewest in an 18-game season in program history. The Wildcats allowed the lowest shot per game total, 12.5, in the program’s seven-season history. The Wildcats lowered their opponent shots per game average from 2021 by 1.6 shots (14.1 to 12.5).
K-State also set the school record for the fewest shots on goal per game allowed (5.5), while Wildcat goalkeepers allowed 24 goals in 2022, tying for the second-fewest goals allowed in a season since K-State played a full 18-match schedule in 2017. K-State tied for the second-most shutouts in a season with five. The Wildcats also set the school record for scoreless halves in a season with 22.
With his guidance, freshman defender Jazmin Brown became the program's second Big 12 All-Freshman Team selection.
In his first season with the Wildcats in 2021, Trentham helped the K-State defense tie the school record for shutouts in a season with six and tied the school records for consecutive shutouts with three and scoreless halves for a season with 20. The Wildcats also established a new school record for consecutive shutout minutes at 317:55 from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2.
In addition to the shutouts, K-State also set the school record for fewest shots allowed in a season (253) in an 18-game schedule and allowed the second-fewest goals, 24, in an 18-game schedule in program history.
Under his tutelage, K-State defender Jesse Loren was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week (Aug. 31). He also aided goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer to a pair of Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week honors (Oct. 12).
Before moving to the Little Apple, Trentham served six seasons as a member of the Missouri coaching staff in 2020, serving as the associate head coach.
Trentham, a native of O’Fallon, Missouri, and a 1999 graduate of Columbia College, primarily worked with the Tiger defense – a unit that thrived under his tutelage.
In his first season at Mizzou in 2015, the Tigers set a school record with only 17 goals allowed on the season. The Mizzou backline held opponents to fewer than 10 shots a game, with only 39.2-percent being on goal. The Tigers allowed only 10 goals in 11 SEC games.
Despite playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules in 2018, Mizzou posted five shutouts on the year – three in SEC play. Starting goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey ended her career by earning 2018 All-SEC Second Team honors
In 2017, Mizzou posted three shutouts, and the program won its first SEC Tournament game since 2012 with a 3-1 win over Alabama in the first round.
Mizzou reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016, Trentham’s second season on staff. The Tigers posted three shutouts on the season while going 11-7-2 (6-4-1). Midfielder/defender Lauren Seldain was also named to the 2016 All-SEC Second Team.
Prior to returning to Missouri, Trentham spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Colorado. With the Buffaloes, he helped the program post a record of 36-22-7 and two-straight NCAA Tournament berths during that span.
Trentham spent one season as an assistant at Wyoming in 2011, helping the Cowgirls to a 12-5-4 record and the program’s first-ever spot in the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game.
Before his move up the ladder to NCAA Division I, Trentham enjoyed a nine-year stint (2002-10) as the head coach at Montana State-Billings.
At the time of his assignment, Montana State-Billings had never enjoyed a winning season. When he departed, Trentham had guided the program to an 85-75-10 record and the program’s first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. In 2010, Trentham was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Trentham holds a USSF National Goalkeeping license, a NSCAA Premier Diploma and a USSF “A” license.
Trentham earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Columbia College in 1999 and a master’s degree in education in health and physical education from East Stroudsburg in 2007. He and his wife, the former Jennifer Lawler, have two children, Landon and Adelyn.
