K-State Ends First Season in Big 12 on Friday Night

Oct 27, 2017 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State women's soccer looked to send its five seniors off with a victory in the final match of the 2017 season, but Iowa State finished a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to down the Wildcats, 2-1, at the K-State Soccer Complex.

"We had a much better second half," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about the flow of the match. "We controlled the game the second half and we had a lot of chances. You can see that sometimes our youth sets in and we make mistakes in critical parts of the game that allow the game to get away from us."

The two teams combined for a total of 40 shots on the night, a Big 12 season-high, as the Wildcats tallied a 21-19 edge in total shots. The Cyclones edged K-State in shots on goal, 6-5, and corner kicks, 8-5.

Kansas State (6-11-1, 1-8-0 Big 12) fended off a number of early chances by Iowa State. The Cyclones outshot K-State 7-0 in the first 30 minutes of the match. Iowa State crossed a ball in the 28th minute, that a Cyclone was able to attempt a one hopper from eight yards out. K-State goalkeeper Miranda Larkin was able to stop the ball on her line with a one-handed save.

Iowa State (3-12-3, 1-6-2) took the lead just before halftime, as Taylor Wagner ripped a shot from 28 yards out in the 40th minute. The ball reached Larkin just barely off the ground and slipped through her fingers and between her legs for the goal.

The Wildcats almost equaled the match in the 45th minute. A cross from Tatum Wagner found the head of an Iowa State defender. The Cyclone defense misplayed the ball to the far post and the Wildcats' Katie Cramer sent a header back across the frame. Iowa State was able to just barely clear the ball off the line to prevent the game-tying goal.

At the break, the two teams were tied in shots at 10 apiece with K-State holding a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.

Kansas State became more aggressive in its attack in the second half. The aggressive offense resulted in the second penalty kick in program history, as Iowa State was whistled for a hand ball on their goal line following a K-State corner kick.

Freshman Brookelynn Entz stepped forward and scored the first penalty kick goal in program history with a shot into the upper right corner in the 64th minute to tie the match at one apiece. The goal was the fifth of the season for Entz, giving her the K-State record for career goals.

Iowa State responded with a penalty kick of their own in the 73rd minute, as K-State was whistled for a foul on an aggressive tackle in the 18-yard box. Emily Steil stepped up and finished the attempt into the upper right corner of the K-State goal.

K-State was unable to build up a final offensive charge to even the match in the final 17 minutes.

The Wildcats tallied an 11-9 edge in total shots in the second half and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.

Kansas State concludes its second season of action and its first in the Big 12 with an overall record of 6-11-1 and a league mark of 1-8-0. The six wins are a new program high for wins in a season, while the Wildcats picked up their first Big 12 win on October 6 at Kansas.

"I think we overachieved and we were a lot more accelerated than people anticipated," said Dibbini about the program's first season in the Big 12. "We were picked last because we were new. We managed to stay and compete in every match."

The Wildcats were led in scoring by a pair of freshmen, as Entz registered 11 points and Hannah Davis tallied nine. Entz set the single season record for goals with five, while Davis set the single season mark for assists with five.

"I think we gained a lot of respect," said Entz. "We stayed in games and we did not lose by very much when we did. We really challenged our opponents and put them to the test. I know we really earned some respect but I wished we would not have gotten last because that is what everybody expected of us. We were really trying to prove everyone wrong but I feel like we did well in this season overall."

What They Said

Kansas State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On the loss given the circumstances…
"We had a much better second half. We controlled the game the second half and we had a lot of chances. You can see that sometimes our youth sets in and we make mistakes in critical parts of the game that allow the game to get away from us."

On the mood of the team after Iowa State's first goal…
"The game of soccer is all about momentum. There were a lot of shifts today in momentum. When we scored we gained some momentum and when they scored they gained some momentum. Obviously we had a much better second half but we just have to get better at keeping the foot on the pedal and trying to put teams away. The Big 12 has been a challenge but we competed and did a nice job this year."

On the first season in the Big 12…
"I think we overachieved and we were a lot more accelerated than people anticipated. We were picked last because we were new. We managed to stay and compete in every match."

Kansas State Freshman Midfielder Brookelynn Entz

On her goal…
"I thought we should have had a penalty kick earlier when we got fouled in the box so I was glad that the referee called that one. It does not really matter who scored, I just wanted to win the game. I was really disappointed that we could not today for our seniors."

On the offensive struggles…
"That has been the story of our season and even the story of Iowa State's. We could not get very many goals and that is something we need to work on in the spring and hopefully we will improve on next year."

On the first season in the Big 12…
"I think we gained a lot of respect. We stayed in games and we did not lose by very much when we did. We really challenged our opponents and put them to the test. I know we really earned some respect but I wished we would not have gotten last because that is what everybody expected of us. We were really trying to prove everyone wrong but I feel like we did well in this season overall."

Iowa State Head Coach Tony Minatta

On the game…
"It was a crazy game. I do not know how many crossbars each team hit and there was obviously the two penalty kicks. Credit to K-State, they really came out inspired and played very hard. We have gone through so much this season in injuries so to find the will to come back and get the win is a testament to our girls. A lot of teams would have packed it up a long time ago with the circumstances they went through, but they just kept fighting to get the win and not a lot of teams can say they finish their season with a win. We are moving forward and looking toward our spring ball."

On attacking intent despite being eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament…
"We found it at Texas Tech. We overshot them with 22 shots and I think everything just carried over from that game. K-State changed their game up a little bit with their formation so it gave us opportunity to attack on the dribble, release our forwards in and play our wings up a little bit higher. We took advantage of that and had some great opportunities, something that we will be able to continue and move forward with. Obviously with the injuries we have had we had to be a little bit conservative with it."
