K-State Downs South Dakota; Matches Win Total from 2016

Sep 14, 2017 | Soccer

VERMILLION, South Dakota – Kansas State tied its win total from the inaugural season on Thursday, as the Wildcats downed South Dakota, 1-0, at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex. This was K-State's second road win of the season.

"It was a grinder," said head coach Mike Dibbini about the afternoon. "It was hot out here today on this turf. It zapped us a little bit in the first half and our depth had to come into play more just to get out of the first half. We made some adjustments and talked about how to break the organization of their defense and break their minds. We created more chances in the second half and we just needed one for some separation and we got it."

With the wind at their backs in the first half, Kansas State fired off a total of eight shots including three on goal. South Dakota registered six shots with just one on goal.

Kansas State (4-3-1) came out of halftime playing with more energy and in the 52nd minute, Hannah Davis gathered in a throw in from Morgan Egan. Davis drove to the end line and crossed a pass in front of the South Dakota net. Freshman midfielder Maddie Souder charged in and put a solid foot on the ball but Coyote goalkeeper Parker Rytz made the save.

"My first cross I was just hoping someone was there," said Davis about her pass to Souder. "We practice crossing and finishing a lot, so I knew I had to get it to the end line and get it in. Maddie was so close. We knew that we couldn't go over the top to score today, we would have to get it closer to goal than what we were trying.

Four minutes later, K-State finally broke the scoreless tie. Junior Tatum Wagner charged hard to the end line left of the South Dakota net. Wagner's low cross found the left foot of freshman Hannah Davis who redirected the ball from six yards toward the right post and into the net.

"Tatum got it to the end line and I knew I had to bust it to the spot to get it on goal. It feels good to finally score," said David about her goal.

The goal was the first of Davis's K-State career, while Wagner was credited with her second assist of the season and the sixth of her K-State career.

K-State fended off a furious charge from South Dakota in the final minute to preserve the win.

Kansas State senior goalkeeper Miranda Larkin registered four saves for her fourth shutout this season. Larkin owns all nine shutouts in K-State's history.

K-State finished with 17 total shots, including six on goal. South Dakota finished with 13 shots and four on goal.

Kansas State will have one final tune-up before its first Big 12 weekend, as the Wildcats host Colorado State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Standing room-only tickets for Sunday's match are available for only $5.

The match between the Wildcats and Rams will be streamed on ESPN3, while an audio broadcast will be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
