Sep 08, 2017 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – In the 22nd match in program history, Kansas State women's soccer saw its first player register a multi-goal game as freshmen Brookelynn Entz tallied a pair in the Wildcats' 3-1 win over Central Arkansas on Friday night at the K-State Soccer Complex.
Kansas State (3-2-1) was led by Entz with two goals, while junior midfielder Morgan Mauck finished with the game-winning goal and an assist. This is the first time in program history that two players registered three or more points in the same game, as Entz registered four points while Mauck carded three. Entz credited her entire team on her pair of tallies.
"I got the goals because our offense was moving around a lot. We were so dynamic and the goals just came because of that. Really it was just a team effort we played so well together and thats why I got those two goals."
K-State took the early lead on Central Arkansas (2-5-0) in the 19th minute of the first half, as junior midfielder Morgan Mauck played a through ball into the 18-yard box for Entz. The product of Newton, Kansas, was able to run up to the ball on the right side of the net and took an easy touch and then rolled her shot from 14 yards past Central Arkansas goalkeeper Lauren Mercuri.
The goal was the first of Entz's K-State career, while the assist from Mauck was the first of her K-State career.
K-State carried its 1-0 lead into the 58th minute when Mauck played give and go with freshman forward Hannah Davis. Mauck dropped off a pass to Davis, who quickly returned the ball to a wide open Mauck. Mauck took a gathering dribble and fired a low rocket to the low left corner of the net from 21 yards out.
"I just saw the opportunity open up," said Mauck about her goal. "I laid it off to Hannah Davis. She gave me an awesome slot pass and just picked up my head and place it in the corner and it went in."
The goal was the second of the season for Mauck and set a new K-State career-high for the Overland Park, Kansas, native. Davis registered her first career point as a Wildcat with the assist.
K-State added an additional insurance goal in the 69th minute, as Entz etched her name into the K-State record books. Following a long service into the box, junior defender Megan Kalkofen headed down the ball from just off the end line and found the foot of Entz, who easily finished the chance and gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Central Arkansas was able to get one back in the 78th minute, as Jordan Slim converted on a header following two unsuccessful shot attempts in the sequence. Slim's first shot was saved by K-State goalkeeper Miranda Larkin and bounced off the crossbar. Slim then had a rebound attempt that bounced off the right post and into the air. K-State was unable to clear the second miss and Slim headed home her rebound.
The goal by the Bears ended K-State home shutout streak at three matches and a total of 349:46. The last goal K-State allowed at home before Friday came against Oral Roberts on September 23, 2016.
Head coach Mike Dibbini was pleased with the effort his team showed in the win.
"I thought the game went really well, it was a very dynamic game. We worked a lot on the offense this week and you could see that play out here tonight."
Overall, K-State tied its season-highs in total shots and shots on goal with 23 and 13, respectively. Central Arkansas fired off 13 shots but only had four on goal. Larkin finished with three saves to pick up her third win of the season.
With the win on Friday night, Kansas State extended its home unbeaten streak to five and its home winning streak to four.
Kansas State will conclude the weekend on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., as the Wildcats host Creighton. Sunday's match will be available on ESPN3, with the audio broadcast on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
